Job description

House Managers have the primary responsibility of overseeing, directing and supervising support teams to fulfil the physical and emotional well-being of the Hearthstone’s persons served during the hours of employment, in accordance with Hearthstone's goals and Gentle Teaching philosophy, accountable to and following any specific instructions given by the General Manager.

Essential Functions (Duties):

  • Knowledge of basic nursing care principles, techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices and other relevant Workplace Safety and Health requirements/responsibilities.
  • Skill in providing specialized and/or long term nursing care to patient/residents.
  • Skill in application of appropriate techniques for patient/resident lifting, transferring and mobilization.

Ensure that people served have the appropriate physical and emotional supports within a Hearthstone home that ensures growth, interdependence, safety and the well-being of those residing within the home. Seek out feedback and listen to their concerns.

* Model and promote Gentle Teaching Principles. Intervene and coach support team to interact appropriately and safely with those they support.

* Model and ensure application of the principles of the Vulnerable Persons’ Act. Report any indications of abuse (See LIC-10 Prevention and Management of Abuse Policy).

* As under the Residential Care support duties, managers are responsible for supervising persons served at all times during support times within the home or in the community. All duties apply to the House Managers while on regular scheduled support times. (Excluding Administration hours)

* Create personalized Program Plans for each person based on the Service Definitions of Building on Abilities. Create and ensure documentation on goals for each person. Employ person centered planning (IPP, Paths). Make recommendations for support teams. Participate in other plans (i.e., Safety Plans, SIS, Diet Plans).

* Research and implement creative program activities. Maintain an activities calendar. Assist individuals to plan and participate in activities.

* Liaise with the families and homes of individuals; attend planning and intake meetings, note concerns and facilitate communications.

* Tour prospective participants and explain services.

* Work with transportation to maintain workable and timely transportation plans.

* Oversee all petty cash funds. Maintain cash control procedures. Create requests for larger expenditures.

* Assist in creating and adhere to Hearthstone operating budgets and individuals’ yearly personal budgets (PFP).

* Ensure maintenance of appropriate records and reports, incidents, individual logs, fire drills etc and information as required by Hearthstone, Manitoba Licensing and Community Living Disability Services.

* Prepare for and participate in yearly Licensing reviews.

* Provide written monthly reports, financial statements, time sheets, scheduling and forms required by Hearthstone, Manitoba Licensing and/or Community Living Disability Services.

* Provide appropriate meal planning, menus and special diets where applicable in conjunction with dieticians and/or staff. Purchase and monitor groceries. Ensure safe sanitation practice.

Oversee medication administration. Ensure support teams are trained for specialized medical needs as required.

Respond to any medical needs, attendance of medical appointments, daily review of MARS sheets, administration of medication and updating all medical information per individual as required. Monitoring and training of all team members in assisting medical areas and issues and medical professionals; doctors, occupational therapist, specialist etc.

Respond to emergency after hour calls. Managers are responsible for assigning coverage when they are planning to be absent.

Hire, train, coach and supervise team members. With the assistance of the General Manager, enact disciplinary action. Maintain supervision/progression notes on team members.

Complete new hire orientation plans: schedule and follow up on required training.

Responsible for workplace Health and Safety as per provincial guidelines.

Create team schedules and work assignments. Monitor time off and schedule changes.

Do payroll for the staff.

Plan and lead team meetings. Fan out directives from administration to team and document. Update team communication book.

Update manuals and policy documents as information is received.

Participate in and monitor site inspections, responsible for regular general up-keep and maintenance repairs of the facility informing the General Manager of major repairs and modifications where required and in the best interest of the individuals. Ensure creation of cleaning routines and follow up compliance. Submit Maintenance requests as needed.

Ensure and communicate openly with the General Manager of all activities, issues and/or changes to routines.

Contribute as a team player, providing positive feed-back, ideas and respect towards others, their teams and leadership. Participate in quality initiatives.

Encourage team members to bring concerns or misgivings to the attention of a Manager or in writing to the General Manager. Consult with the General Manager about concerns over decisions made regarding persons served, their home, family and/or team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF THIS POSITION:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to perform all duties in assigned individuals’ care plans
  • Valid driver’s license and safe vehicle is required
  • Flexibility in scheduled hours of work
  • Mental capacity, physical capacity and temperament to care for others
  • Must be able to read and write at a Grade 12 plus level
  • Business Computer Skills
  • Experience with and compassion for special needs individuals
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Must be able to work with others or alone
  • Post High School Certified education in Disability Services, Healthcare, Human Resources or a combination of education and experience
  • Proven skills in team management, training and development
  • Organizational skills and proven task completion and time management
  • Conflict Management skills
  • Gentle Teaching and ethics

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: From $19.35 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
