Job description

Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

  • Salary is $49,860.46 - $53,184.49 annually for 37.5 - 40 hours weekly.
  • Pension of between 6.1% - 7.1% from employer contributions.
  • Paid time off – including: 5 days personal leave, 15 days sick leave, 10 days’ vacation in the first year which increases to 15 days in the second year, and increases continually every year up to a maximum of 34 days.
  • Room for professional growth in the organization which is the largest provider of homeless shelters in Toronto.


Hours of Work: 5 days per week, normally 9am to 5pm, with one evening per week and some flexibility required.

Job Description:


As a Housing help Worker, you would aid clients in their housing by assessing and supporting their needs, and adhering to the mission statement, policies, and procedures of Homes First Society. Responsibilities involve:

  • Providing support to clients who are facing challenges including Poverty, Mental Health, Addictions, Abuse, and Social Isolation.
  • Providing support with basic Life Management Skills, such as Assertive Communication, Goal Setting, Working with Feedback, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving, and Managing Change.
  • Assist and improve tenants’ Self Esteem while helping them access resources for health and well-being.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals who present hoarding behaviors.
  • Use of Case Management as a tool to support residents in meeting their goals.
  • Working independently and as part of a team.
  • Applying knowledge of rental legislation in Ontario

Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years’ experience in related post- secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices, and systemic reasons for homelessness.
  • Use of excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C, with Certificates in Crisis Prevention and Intervention, would be an asset.
  • Certificate of Completion of Homelessness Learning Hub’s Harm Reduction for the Homelessness Sector considered an asset
  • Ability to work evenings.

Working in an environment where there may be smoke is required.
