Viola's Place Society is an adult homeless shelter providing services to both men and women age 25+. The Housing Support Worker will be working on a team with two other Housing Support Workers.
The role of the Housing Support Worker will include but is not limited to:
- Development of new materials and training to promote life skills, good tenancy, health and well-being, etc.
- Present and facilitate workshops to a diverse group of adults
- Assess the themes of client barriers and community gaps to develop programming aimed at meeting the needs of the homeless population
- Participate in team brainstorming sessions for the purpose of workshop and program development
- Provide Housing Support to individuals in Pictou County who are facing homelessness
- Establish respectful working relationships with all clients, and assist team with case planning
- Coordinate community-based activities for clients to promote skill building and self-care
- Provide advocacy and referrals to community agencies for needs such as counselling services, alcohol and drug programming, disability assessment, etc.
- Transportation of clients to medical appointments, apartment viewings, etc.
- Assist clients in securing income either by employment, EI, Income Assistance, etc.
- Become knowledgeable of the Nova Scotia Tenancy Act and assist in eviction prevention to maintain housing stability
Responsibilities:
- Must have excellent verbal, written, and listening skills and maintain confidentiality
- Computer skills required. Familiarity with PowerPoint is an asset
- Must be highly self-motivated and able to work efficiently with little supervision
- Must be adaptable and able to work effectively under pressure
- Contribute to the development of a positive and compassionate environment
- Ability to maintain clear and concise case notes
- Must be able to work exceptionally well in a team environment
- Experience with adults facing homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse is preferred
- Must have the ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency and conflict situations
- Must be reliable and mature
- Other duties and requirements may be asked of the successful applicant
Qualifications:
- Human Services Diploma or other related post secondary education
- Relevant work experience preferred
- A combination of education and experience will be considered for this position
- A criminal record check and vulnerable sector check is required
- Must be over the age of 19
- Must have a reliable vehicle
