Job description

NAC is currently seeking a full time Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor to join our HSE team in Ontario, initially being assigned to our project in Kemptville, ON, and providing support to various sites in Ontario and out-of-province as required.

Position Summary:

The HSE Advisor works closely with all levels of management and employees within the construction and office environments. The HSE Advisor will provide guidance, support and oversight to help the Project deliver on NAC’s HSE System execution. The Intermediate HSE Advisor is a career/working level individual contributor who regularly participates in both strategic and tactical HSE initiatives as directed by HSE Management.

Job Description:

Provide HSE guidance, support and oversight to the Project and its personnel. Specifically:

  • Actively support the NAC Health & Safety Program and all actions specific to meeting annual HSE goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership, direction and support of the development and administration of all
  • HSE practices, policies and plans for the project in accordance with the HSE Manual and applicable legislation.
  • Act as a trusted HSE subject matter expert who drives the culture of HSE excellence at the project level
  • Liaise with external agencies, as required
  • Supervise and mentor Junior HSE staff, as required.
  • Recommend direction and implement plans for the project based on HSE audit/inspection results, investigations and will ensure that the project is maintaining compliance with the NAC HSE system.
  • Initiate, promote, implement and maintain HSE projects and initiatives
  • Maintain Project’s HSE documentation including Project Specific Safety Plan, HSE Risk register and applicable records
  • Represent the HSE portfolio at subcontractor engagement, project planning, work scheduling and performance review meetings
  • Lead HSE orientation and training delivery
  • Champion and support hazard identification and risk assessment through Job Hazard
  • Analyses and Field Level Hazard Assessments
  • Maintain and inventory of the Project’s critical tasks. Foster application of and adherence to corresponding Safe Work Practices and Procedures
  • Lead HSE communication efforts through toolbox meetings and other means
  • Coordinate project-level HSE inspections
  • Identify instances of Life Saving Rule violations and recommend to project management suitable disciplinary actions
  • Manage, respond to, investigate and report HSE accidents/incidents/near misses
  • Coordinate completion of corrective actions to address Project-level HSE deficiencies
  • Host COR audits and other performance verifications at the Project level
  • Provide leadership to the Project’s Joint Health & Safety Committee
  • Lead Project-level HSE reporting
  • As requested, provide timely support to the Corporate HSE Manager on company- and program-wide HSE issues
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Junior HSE Coordinator(s), as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned by the applicable Regional HSE Manager and/or the Corporate HSE Manager.

Requirements:

  • Willing to travel on short notice, sometimes to remote and/or out of province projects for coverage or placement.
  • Ability to work with a team and collaborate with a variety of different teams
  • Obtain a minimum of a provincial “Certified HSE Officer” certificate (other eligible designations include ”National Construction Safety Officer” [NCSO] and “Canadian Registered Safety Technician”)
  • Minimum 3 years' experience with occupation health and safety management
  • Knowledge of occupational health, safety and environmental management, applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulations/legislation and applicable Human Rights
  • Experience with incident investigation, workplace inspection and job hazard analysis
  • Actively participate in continuous professional development throughout the course of employment
  • Proven ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and records
  • Service and team-oriented leader who pays specific attention to detail
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Tact, diplomacy, flexibility, listening and persuasion skills with enthusiasm and a positive, results focused attitude
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with database applications and administration systems
  • “Commendable or Outstanding” performance score results for prior 2 years
  • Complete at least 1 HSE task/initiative (in support of the organization’s HSE Management System) outside of regular responsibilities, per year
