Description

The Yellowhead Regional Library (YRL) is seeking an energetic, proactive, customer-focused candidate to serve as the primary liaison between YRL and local Indigenous communities, fostering connections and providing expertise to ensure culturally relevant library service. This position will offer guidance and support to member libraries, acting as a resource in enhancing Indigenous engagement and promoting sustainable library service to Indigenous communities within the YRL region.

Requirements

Broad tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide culturally informed expertise and support to member libraries in all aspects of library management and operations, with a specific emphasis on understanding and addressing the unique needs and perspectives of Indigenous communities.
  • Contribute to the creation and management of culturally relevant resources and services that empower Indigenous communities and enhance their engagement with the library, while also proactively identifying and addressing emerging needs within these communities.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and workshops that promote cultural competency, respect and understanding among library staff, focusing on Indigenous perspectives, histories and contemporary issues to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for Indigenous patrons.
  • Represent the library system with integrity and cultural sensitivity at Indigenous community gatherings and events, actively engaging with Indigenous stakeholders, leaders and partners to build meaningful relationships and collaborations that support the delivery of culturally relevant library services.
  • Contribute to the achievement of service goals by providing workplans, proposals and the development of departmental initiatives.
  • Cooperate with colleagues for the achievement of YRL’s goals and strategic plan.

Qualifications

  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • One year of related library work experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous library services and Indigenous People’s histories, cultures and experiences.
  • Familiarity with the ways in which Indigenous ways of knowing can strengthen library settings
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with a diverse population, balance multiple processes and priorities, adapt to changing environments, work independently, and manage time to ensure project completion.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including delivery of training and presentations in a variety of formats and venues.
  • Knowledge of legislation impacting public library operations in Alberta.
  • Proficiency in a modern, technological library environment.
  • Proficiency in evaluation and impact analysis to inform decision making an asset.
  • Experience or understanding of adult learners and change processes an asset.
  • Experience with statistical reporting, technical support and needs assessments an asset.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the Indigenous languages spoken in Treaty 6 and/or 8 an asset.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence and the aptitude for travel to rural and outlying communities.
  • A commitment to upholding the Canadian Federation of Library Associations statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion.

Term and Compensation

This is a temporary, full-time position with the possibility of renewal, and the term will last 52 weeks from the start date. The salary starts at $2,336 biweekly based on the 2024 salary grid and a 35-hour work week.
