Minimum Qualifications:Must currently be enrolled in a recognized and accredited Canadian post-secondary institution throughout the duration of the co-op term. You must also be returning to a post-secondary institution after the co-op term is completed. Depending on the needs and location of the team, you will need to work PST or MDT or relocate to a specific office (Vancouver or site-based)
Job Overview
  • Trail Operations is an integrated lead-zinc smelting and refining complex located in Trail, situated in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern, British Columbia. With a workforce of 1,500 employees and contract workers, the metallurgical operations produce refined zinc and lead and a variety of precious and specialty metals, chemicals and fertilizer products
  • Under the supervision of the Industrial Hygienist (ROH) the co-op student will have the opportunity to learn and apply techniques related to occupational hygiene and carry out assignments using their knowledge of chemical and physical agents, instrumentation and sampling materials

Responsibilities
  • Participation in the health and safety programs of Teck to ensure that everyone goes home safe and healthy every day
  • The primary focus of the co-op work term will be to perform workplace monitoring for a wide variety of chemical and physical hazards
  • Upon completion of fieldwork, the co-op student will be responsible for analyzing results, writing reports and communicating recommendations to area and plant organizations.
  • Creating and evaluating innovative ideas and technologies to help improve the way we do business
  • The student will also have the opportunity to complete a specific Industrial Hygiene survey project during the work-term. Previous projects have included assessments of electro magnetic fields, heavy metals additive effects, silica exposure, paint shop isocyanates and VOCs, machine shop metalworking fluid, surface wipe sampling for metals, laser engraving assessment, and modern sampling techniques such as direct reading dust monitoring and synchronized video capture

Qualifications
  • Working towards an Undergraduate/Graduate degree or diploma in Occupational Hygiene, Occupational and Environmental Health, Occupational Health, or Industrial Hygiene
  • Must currently be enrolled in a recognized and accredited Canadian post-secondary institution throughout the duration of the co-op term. You must also be returning to a post-secondary institution after the co-op term is completed
  • A sound and practical knowledge of the principles of Industrial Hygiene and sampling procedures.
  • Motivated self-starters with excellent organizational skills; able to work under minimal supervision and be able to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Experience working effectively with union and management personnel.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a capability to communicate complex ideas to all levels
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to track and analyze data as well as manage project timelines
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word and Excel is necessary
  • Experience working in heavy industry or mining considered an asset

All students will be required to complete pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work. Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Wage Range: $4,150 - $4,883 / Month
Salary is commensurate with the number of academic semesters and prior co-op experiences completed.
