Job description

Canada’s leading science and technology organization is looking for an Instrumentation and Control or Computer Systems Technician who has a passion for technology, appreciates process rigour, and enjoys the responsibility for ensuring that the performance and availability of equipment, applications and network infrastructure is optimal, secure, and meets the needs of an industrial research team.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is Canada's premier nuclear science and technology organization with 3500 highly skilled employees deliver a range of nuclear services – from research and development, design and engineering of specialized technology, waste management and decommissioning. CNL's cyber security research team located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, conducts leading edge research in cyber security of instrumentation and control systems in the nuclear industry. Fundamental to the research is a state-of-the-art cyber range designed to model the segmented networks of digital instrumentation and control systems and business systems that are representative of a nuclear power plant. At the heart of the cyber range is a simulation of a nuclear power plant, linked to actual operational technology equipment (programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and human-machine interfaces (HMIs)) and to small-scale process mock-ups (consisting of tanks, pumps, valves, level, and flow measurements). Cyber security technologies are deployed throughout to support protection from, detection of, and response and recovery to, cyber-attacks. CNL is looking for an individual who has an eagerness and aptitude for working with technology, welcomes the opportunity to learn new tools, and enjoys being a member of a dynamic team doing innovative work.

The successful candidate will support the management and maintenance of the cyber range and its information and operational technologies (IT and OT). The candidate’s primary responsibilities will include specifying, procuring, assembling, configuring and maintaining the cyber range hardware and software and any other equipment that is being used by the team whose focus is on advancing the cyber security of operational technology environments employed in nuclear and other critical infrastructure. This will require using a combination of electrical, instrumentation & control and computer skills.

It is recognized that supporting IT versus OT involves different skill sets and that candidates will likely be more experienced in one technology than another. A demonstrated ability to learn quickly, have strong self-motivation and enthusiasm for the work, attention to detail and good organization skills, will be important factors in selecting an individual for the position.
