Integrated Canadian Experience Teacher

Full Time Permanent Starting Late August 2024

JOB PURPOSE:

The York School is looking for an experienced and inspirational teacher to be part of the Senior School faculty as an Integrated Canadian Experience (ICE) Teacher. This unique role will involve teaching within our ICE programme, an innovative interdisciplinary study of Canadian history, geography, civics, and literature specifically designed for Grade 9 students. The incumbent would also teach one other English or Humanities course within the Senior School. The successful candidate will have had training or successful experience at the Senior Level with the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and will be well-versed in project-based and experiential learning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach and assess the curriculum within the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework and philosophy of the Middle Years Programme (MYP)

  • Infuse The York School’s mission, vision, and values into all curricular and co-curricular activities

  • Ongoing assessment of students, including report cards, progress reports and communication with parents and the teaching team

  • Establish and uphold student expectations through effective disciplinary strategies, fostering an environment conducive to teaching and learning

  • Utilizes a variety of strategies to build strong developmental relationships with students 

  • Incorporate innovation and technology to enhance student learning across the curriculum

  • Provides an environment that supports bringing a diversity of voices and worldviews to classroom material and learning experiences, including local and global perspectives

  • Create a positive and engaging teaching and learning environment through adept classroom management practices and techniques

  • Stay abreast of best practices by actively participating in professional learning opportunities and engaging in professional development meetings

  • Contribute to student co-curricular and athletic programs as a teacher lead/supervisor or coach

  • Contribute to student experiential learning by chaperoning or leading on overnight excursions within the ICE Programme, such as the Ottawa Trip and ICE Winter Camping Trip, etc.

  • Participate in supervision as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with specialization in English, History, Geography, or other related discipline, B.Ed. and membership in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers

  • Minimum 2-3 years experience teaching English, History, or Geography, or other related subjects

  • Training and experience teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) considered an asset

  • Prior experience in outdoor education and co-curricular planning is considered an asset

  • Dedicated and innovative educator with a passion for outdoor education

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to interact with students, parents and teachers cheerfully, enthusiastically, courteously, patiently and with discretion

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • A proactive team player who is flexible and self-motivated with a “How can I help?” attitude

  • Considerable proficiency in navigating a technologically rich school environment, with expertise in Google Workspace considered an asset

WORKING REQUIREMENTS:

  • The York School Campus, Toronto

  • Evening, overnight and weekend travel for school trips required
