Job Description

AECOM's Environment Team is actively seeking an Intermediate Ecologist/Biologist to join our Impact Assessment and Permitting Team in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This position will integrate into a well-developed team of environmental scientists, ecologists, and engineers to provide support on various infrastructure and development projects across a range of sectors such as mining, transport (road/rail), water/wastewater utilities, renewable energy, and oil and gas.

Individuals should have experience conducting biological inventories, including characterizing terrestrial vegetation communities, fish habitat assessments, wetland evaluations, wildlife surveys, environmental impact assessments, and a variety of natural resource planning projects. Experience conducting terrestrial vegetation surveys will be considered an asset. We are seeking a highly motivated, accountable and organized candidate that works collaboratively with other team members and is an effective communicator. Strong technical writing skills and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities. This is a permanent full-time position reporting to the Impact Assessment & Permitting Lead in Winnipeg.

The position will involve working with project managers and senior professionals to provide support on environmental investigations including baseline studies, environmental assessments, conservation and reclamation plans, species at risk permitting and mitigation plans and related scopes of work. Experience coordinating ecology projects and/or ecology components of larger projects will be considered an asset.

Key roles for the position include:

  • Coordinating and organizing field crews to ensure proper execution of field program and reporting;

  • Conducting field investigations according to study requirements;

  • Conducting Species at Risk habitat assessments and species-specific surveys when required;

  • Maintaining effective communication with clients and staff;

  • Adhering to and enforcing corporate health and safety protocols;

  • Interpreting results of investigations and integrating results with additional biophysical data; and

  • Writing effective reports in a scientific style.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in environmental science or biology and a minimum of 2 - 5 years of relevant experience required

  • Knowledge and experience conducting environmental surveys (e.g., birds, other wildlife, vegetation communities characterization; fish and fish habitat) in Manitoba

  • Experience preparing technical reports such as environmental assessments, baseline surveys and environmental mitigation plans

  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience interpreting wildlife habitat requirements and preparing effective compensation plans

  • Experience conducting terrestrial species at risk plant surveys

  • Experience preparing conservation and reclamation plans

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting bat acoustic monitoring and analyzing data using Kaleidoscope Pro or Sonobat

  • Additional field experience such as aquatic sampling (e.g., water quality, fish)

  • Knowledge and experience with federal and provincial acts, regulations, policies and guidelines

  • Experience with satellite and air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and map and compass orientation

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently

  • Ability to work in both field and office environments

  • Previous experience and training in the operation of all-terrain vehicles, boats and snowmobiles
