Duties:

VIU is looking for two regular, part-time invigilators to join our Assessment and Exam Services (AES) team at the Nanaimo campus. If you are committed to student success, pride yourself on your professionalism and possess a strong work ethic combined with some tech-savvy skills, then this opportunity might be perfect for you.

Overview of role:

  • ensure a secure and welcoming testing environment for all students,
  • support students during in-person exams,
  • handle multiple tasks and calmly troubleshoot exam-related issues,
  • maintain professionalism and empathy in various situations including student distress and exam challenges,
  • collaborate with our team to promote inclusion and student-centered services.

If you have a genuine desire to see VIU students succeed, we encourage you to apply. This position is located within the Division of Student Affairs (Student Services) and involves administering accommodated exams for students with disabilities, pre-program assessments, and professional exam invigilation services. Your role will play a vital part in our mission to support student success and open doors to future academic and career opportunities for our students.

As an invigilator, you will be expected to:

  • work independently while adhering to specific exam guidelines and autonomously troubleshoot technical issues,
  • ensure students with exam accommodations receive a consistent experience, which includes noting permissible and non-permissible items in the exam room while verifying compliance with exam accommodation requirements,
  • maintain a professional exam sitting through active invigilation, including meticulous ID checks,
  • securely handle all test materials and ensuring proper filing,
  • gather and prepare all necessary equipment prior to entering the exam room,
  • monitor the status of exam equipment, including power levels and the availability of appropriate exam materials,
  • be proficient in using office equipment like scanners, copiers, Windows-based PC computers and laptops,
  • organize a high volume of paperwork with careful attention to detail and demonstrate basic skills in the MS Office suite, particularly in Word and Excel.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of a high school diploma (Grade 12), minimum of one year of recent, relevant experience in a post-secondary setting.

  • accurately manage large volumes of time-sensitive, detailed information, while also being adept at meeting deadlines, adhering to guidelines, and independently solving problems in a dynamic environment,
  • basic proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook,
  • excellent verbal communication skills in English,
  • ability to work independently and deliver exams and assessments according to specified guidelines and instructions,
  • possess technical know-how to troubleshoot basic computer issues,
  • demonstrate professionalism under pressure and maintain a respectful and collaborative attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with adult learners with disabilities and familiarity with assistive software such as Kurzweil, Dragon, and Read and Write.
  • Extensive experience with online and paper-based exam invigilation.
  • Experience invigilating exams at the post-secondary level.

VIU is pleased to offer eligible employees a comprehensive benefit plan; ample paid holiday time; professional development opportunities and a desirable pension plan. As part of the VIU campus community, our employees work with supportive colleagues within an encouraging environment and are provided with the tools and training that promote learning and development. The perks of VIU employment are multiple, and include well-being initiatives and services, strategic discounts, and flexible work opportunities.

Note:

  • Short-listed candidates must provide original transcripts, or applicable original certifications at time of interview.
  • All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
  • Vancouver Island University (VIU) is collectively committed to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive working and learning environment for faculty, staff, and students. In our journey towards greater diversity, we invite applications from members of equity-seeking communities including women, racialized and Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons of all gender identities and sexual orientations who bring value to the VIU community through their lived experiences. We encourage members of all equity-seeking groups to self-identify within their application cover letter. When a candidate voluntarily discloses this information in their cover letter, the information will be used only for the fulfillment of the career opportunity. Disclosure and/or self-identification with an equity-seeking group will not lead to advantageous treatment of a candidate who is not qualified.
