Job description

HFI Pyrotechnics has two pressing IT needs which require the services of a qualified IT professional:
Data Security : As a manufacturer of Controlled Goods, HFI requires more than the normal level of data security, since all of our product design data is stored on the company network. Over the course of many years data has been stored without any particular discipline as to how it is labelled and who has access to it. Currently corporate data totals 400GB and is maintained in several thousand individual files and folders. The first task is to:

  • Understand the Data Security requirements of the Controlled Goods Legislation
  • Create a security access hierarchy which reflects organisational responsibilities
  • Develop a file naming protocol
  • Examine every file on the company server with a view to determining
  • Is it unique or a copy of another file? Delete all copies.
  • Is it named appropriately? Re-name if not appropriate.
  • What level of security should it be afforded? Allocate the security level to each file.
  • Author a comprehensive cyber security manual which can be used going forward.

Data Capture: HFI, because of its involvement with manufacturing to military standards using dangerous and/or explosive materials, captures massive amounts of qualitative and quantitative data at every stage of its operations from incoming raw material receiving, through storage, manufacturing, product testing and shipping. Currently all data is manually recorded on paper and some of it is transcribed into the company accounting system, some is transcribed into the Quality Analyst system, some is transcribed into the payroll system, some is transcribed into various spreadsheets in operation, and much is merely stored. We struggle frequently to locate data, and we potentially are missing information that better access to data could provide. The second task is to:

  • Identify all data collection locations and equip each with the capability to enter data directly into a database – most operation areas are now able to access WiFi – RP still needs some attention
  • Design a single database capable of receiving all data
  • Identify and train all those responsible for the data entry
  • Once captured, identify the most cost effective method of routing the data to its end use
  • Assist in designing database reports and inquiry systems

On-going: Having successfully completed the starting projects, the IT Specialist will be expected to maintain and continuously improve the IT hardware and software, in addition to providing all daily IT trouble-shooting activities.
