Join us as a Junior Planner

Full-time, Up to 18 Month Duration

Are you passionate about shaping the future of our city? Do you have a keen interest in municipal planning and development? We're seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a Junior Planner. What you'll be doing:

In this role, reporting to the Manager of Planning Services, the Junior Planner performs a diverse array of professional planning tasks related to development and long-range planning. This entails managing planning applications from inception to fruition. Additionally, the position aids in crafting planning reports and other essential documents for City Administration, the Municipal Planning Commission, the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, and Council. The Junior Planner also has the opportunity to collaborate with senior members of the planning team on various applications, plans, and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise to support the implementation of the Land Use Bylaw.
  • Assist in preparing planning reports and documents for City Administration and Council.
  • Collaborate with management on amendments to the Land Use Bylaw.
  • Facilitate technical oversight for planning staff in their roles as Development Officers.
  • Process development permits and assist with subdivision applications.
  • Participate in public engagement events and meetings as needed.

Required Competencies:

  • Knowledge of Alberta's planning legislation and municipal planning processes.
  • Knowledge of the Alberto Land Registration system.
  • Familiarity with spatial analyses and cartographic principles.
  • Experience in project management related to municipal planning.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to adapt to new software systems.
  • Effective multitasking abilities with a commitment to professionalism.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capacity to engage with the public and community groups positively.
  • Proficient in research, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Commitment to health, wellness, and safety practices.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a bachelor's, or master's, degree in the Planning field, or equivalent, from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a professional planning capacity.
  • Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.
