Job description

For over 26 years, Harvest House Atlantic exists to meet the needs of people who are lost, lonely, addicted, and hurting, by “Connecting people of compassion with people in need to make a difference.” Our services include our Emergency Shelter, Community Centre, Addiction Recovery Program, and residential Step-Up Program.

As we cater to the needs of the homeless population, we are actively seeking highly motivated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Kitchen Shelter Assistant. This role is pivotal in ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for vulnerable populations. In this role, you will assist the Kitchen Manager with the operations related to the kitchen services at Harvest House Atlantic.

Reporting directly to the Kitchen Shelter Manager

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Kitchen Manager with the meal plan and follow as directed.
  • Coordinate and provide meaningful opportunities to volunteers and groups
  • Ensure that the kitchen laundry is done on a regular basis
  • Process donations when required (Walmart, Starbucks, In-kind donations)
  • Organize food storage room and keep all storage areas clean and orderly.
  • Ensure that all kitchen areas are cleaned a minimum of once a week
  • Process donations from local donors by weighing, registering and storing them
  • Follow the schedule as set by the manager ensuring that you notify the manager a minimum of 12 hours in advance in the case of sick leave and two weeks in advance for all other absences
  • Ensure that a staff or a volunteer is available to serve meals
  • Keep an inventory of all food items, prepare weekly grocery list, and purchase grocery items as required respecting the budget approved by the Kitchen Manager
  • Ensure kitchen cleaning is completed and all areas are sanitized following the province sanitary standards
  • Keep records of Meal Served
  • Track food donations and provide donors with information as required
  • Support the preparation and serving of food for the shelter guests
  • Check donations daily and incorporate them with the menu
  • Ensure that supplies are available for preparing meals. Monitor the quantities being served

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience working in a kitchen or food service environment is preferred
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Safe Food Handling certificate is mandatory
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) and First Aid Certificate are mandatory
  • Probationary period of Six (6) months

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: From $19.00 per hour
