Laboratory Technician
A Laboratory Technician is responsible for preparing and analyzing a variety of specimen types for the purpose of animal molecular diagnostic testing, as well as supporting the laboratory in basic sample preparation and general laboratory maintenance and operation. Experience in qPCR and ELISA assays preferred. Experience in any of the following considered an asset: molecular genetics, microbiology, cell biology, entomology.
Reporting and Supervision
- This position is supervised by the Lead Technician and Head of Laboratories
- This position reports directly to the Head of Laboratories
Key Responsibilities
- Sample accessioning and preparation (receipt, labeling, data entry, tracking)
- Participate in the training program for laboratory assays
- Execute laboratory assays according to set standard operating procedures under the supervision of the Lead Technician
- Perform laboratory sanitation daily in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures
- Maintain laboratory records and inventory
- Ensure that safety guidelines are followed at all times
- Operate with respect to the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) and company/client privacy policies
- Other duties as required/assigned
General laboratory duties
- Maintaining a clean and orderly working environment
- Prepare and store all chemicals and reagents accordingly
- General, biohazard, and chemical waste disposal
- Autoclaving and wash-up
- Other duties as required/assigned
Requirements
- B.Sc or MLA, with at least 1 year of laboratory experience
- Experience in qPCR and ELISA assays preferred
- Experience in any of the following considered an asset: molecular genetics, microbiology, cell biology, entomology
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Excellent manual dexterity and ability to stand for long periods of time in the laboratory
- Maintains confidentiality with all information entrusted to the position (PHIA/privacy policies)
- Must be able to pass WHMIS training
- A criminal record check will be completed
Compensation
· Full-time permanent position (approx. 35-40 hours/week)
· Starting wage of $20-22/hour, depending on education and experience
· 4% vacation pay, paid out biweekly
