As a Labourer II, you will ensure proper maintenance and beautification of municipal cemeteries and traditional burial grounds while providing quality customer service to grieving patrons and guests.

Your ability to work with minimal supervision in a changing, sensitive environment will contribute to the success of City operational goals. In this position you will:

  • Interact with the public in a professional manner, especially in sensitive situations
  • Accommodate various cultural group traditions including pall bearing for casket services
  • Operate and complete minor maintenance on equipment
  • Operate hand tools such as planners, power saw/drills, and bull float
  • Dig and locate graves, make frames, mix concrete and install stones
  • Read surveyed grades and design blueprints, ensuring accurate locating of construction points
  • Perform interments and disinterments which include the removing, handling and transporting of human remains
  • Construct forms, mix concrete, install grave markers and fine finish edges around grave markers
  • Locate grave locations without clear reference points in surveyed and unsurveyed cemeteries
  • Assist the Turf and Horticulture Team with maintenance and beautification of cemetery properties
  • Perform related work as required
Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade 10, High School Diploma is preferred
  • 1 year labour experience including maintenance, landscaping, concrete work, or groundskeeping duties, in cemeteries, parks or a similar work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the public in a professional manner, especially in sensitive situations
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and vehicles within confined spaces
  • Physically able to perform the assigned tasks and duties of the position, including manual labour and the use of simple hand/or power tools and light motor vehicles for long periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, organization, time management and prioritization skills required
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Assets:
    • Previous customer service experience in a field operations setting
    • Knowledge of cemetery interment procedures and of various cultural/religious beliefs and traditions
    • Heavy Equipment Certificates/working knowledge (Skid Steer, Backhoe, etc)
    • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED Certificates

Up to 5 temporary full-time positions for up to 6 months with a possibility of extension for up to 11 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday Primary schedule is 8:30 - 4:30. Evening and weekend work may be required to support operational needs
