Labourer Trainee Public Works

The Town of Qualicum Beach is seeking applications for the position of Labourer Trainee in the Public Works Department on a temporary full-time basis for a period of up to eight (8) months.
Typical duties will include:

• Assist in maintaining Town owned roads, boulevards, sidewalks, facilities, and other municipal infrastructure;
• Garbage collection;
• Operate various Town vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, pickups, backhoe, tractors, mowers, and trimmers;
• General labourer duties;
• Set up/take down for special events;
• Other related duties, including airport and utility tasks as assigned.

Required qualifications include:

• Completion of Grade 12
• Experience in all aspects of general labour, specifically in the areas noted above;
• Physical capability to safely complete continuous manual labour (e.g. bending, shoveling, lifting, pushing/pulling, etc) in all weather conditions;
• A valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, particularly when dealing with the public;
• Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a team as well as independently;
• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations with a proven track record of working safely;
• Previous experience working in municipal government setting will be considered an asset.

Note: an equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge will be considered if deemed acceptable by the employer.
The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay is $26.13/hr ($26.65 effective July 1, 2024). Successful applicants will be expected to work 40 hours/week and shifts may include weekends.
