As a Land Surveyor, you will be responsible for providing professional land surveying services to the staff and clients of the division. In this position, you will prepare and register legal plans and documents with registries of the Government of Alberta. Primary duties include:
- Complete complex analysis and land surveying computations to deliver land surveying projects in accordance with current regulations and standards governing surveying in Alberta.
- Register surveying plan packages and other documents with Alberta Land Titles Office or Alberta Environment Parks in accordance with current legislation and governmental procedures.
- Prepare and submit survey control deliverables to the Director of Surveys for the High Precision Network (HPN) and Alberta Survey Control Marker (ASCM) networks in accordance with the current survey control guidelines.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to surveying and drafting teams while ensuring that surveying standards are established and applied.
- Provide professional opinions, advice, coaching, education and guidance on land surveying concepts, methodologies, computations and processes to staff and clients of the division.
- Collaborate with divisional leadership and project teams to update and develop standard operating procedures, standard work instructions, safe work practices, best practices, quality control tools and workflows for land surveying operations.
- Collaborate with peers, committees, and panels of the Alberta Land Surveyors Association for further clarification of complex matters.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology or a related field with at least 5 years of professional experience with municipal and public works projects, including significant experience delivering urban land surveying and survey control projects.
- Registration as an active Alberta Land Surveyor (A.L.S.) with Alberta Land Surveyors Association (ALSA) or licensure by the first day of work.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, along with the ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Demonstrated proficiency in surveying-related software applications such as MicroSurvey and Trimble Business Center (TBC).
- A university degree in Geomatics Engineering or a related field of study will be considered an asset.
- Preference will be given to applicants with the following:
- Applied knowledge of Electronic Submission of Plans (ePlans) and View Information Specific to Your Application (VISTA) with The City of Calgary.
- Experience in riparian boundary determination as per the Surveys Act.
- Experience in public lands dispositions for municipal infrastructure including submitting disposition applications to various provincial departments.
- Experience in Spatial Information System (SPIN2) and submitting Document Registration Requests (DRR) for survey plans and relevant documents to the Land Titles Office (LTO).
- Success in this position requires a demonstrated ability to:
- Solve complex land surveying problems with strong analytical skills including troubleshooting geospatial data issues.
- Communicate effectively, leading and coaching others in land surveying concepts, standards, best practices, and computations.
- Prioritize competing tasks and deadlines, showcasing self-motivation and the capability of working with minimal supervision.
