JOB OVERVIEW

The Landfill Attendant contributes to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities through the efficient handling of the Waste Management and Recycling System at the McKelvey Creek Landfill by accurately assessing and charging businesses and the public for waste management services. This position supports the Environmental Services Department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives.

Landfill Attendants report to the Landfill Supervisor and are responsible for monitoring and controlling use of the landfill site according to relevant legislation, operational certificates and operating principles.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors on-site activities to ensure use occurs according to the operational plan and policies set out in the Regional Solid Waste Management Plan.
  • Where possible, identifies and rejects refuse deemed a special waste, a controlled substance or in any other way unacceptable due to legal or permit requirements. Determines what is acceptable for the site and what is not; informs customers of other sites that will accept their materials.
  • Assesses commercial and residential waste loads and charges accordingly, collects tipping fees, maintains a float, balances the day’s receipts and makes out weekly bank deposits.
  • Instructs customers as to where to dump materials
  • Removes snow from the scale platform and/or the vicinity of the gatehouse. Ensures that a 25-metre radius around the gatehouse is tidy and litter free. Other general housekeeping duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Ensures separation and placement of reduce and recyclables in the appropriate locations
  • Maintains computerized and other records, including those necessary for the purpose of billing users for tipping fees.
  • Enforces the Regional District Refuse Disposal Sites Regulatory Bylaw
  • Monitors the activities of the Landfill contractor to ensure compliance with the terms of the contract.
  • Opens and closes the landfill at the designated times, secures office and entrance gates and sets alarms
  • Performs other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Grade 12 plus 1 - 12 months prior job related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Survival First Aid courses
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures.
  • Keyboarding, cash handling and basic office equipment experience.
  • General knowledge of standard computer applications
  • Knowledge of recycling and general operation of landfills and related materials an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers; ability to handle stressful situations in a constantly changing environment calmly and efficiently.
