The Lead, Communications, Issue Management & Community Engagement will be expected to provide support to projects and initiatives being administered by Ontario Health. The Lead will play a vital role in providing effective organizational communications both internally and externally that is facilitated by the development of communication plans, materials and documents and by ensuring that communications demonstrate clarity, attention to detail and professionalism. The Lead is also responsible for protecting the Ontario Health brand by managing external communications via websites, social media channels and event planning.

Here is what you will be doing:
  • Reporting to the Director, Communications, Issues Management and Engagement, the Lead will work collaboratively with all divisions of Ontario Health North, Ontario Health and/or external health care stakeholders to provide communications leadership.
  • The Lead will develop and implement communications strategies, plans and tools that will meet the needs of various programs/initiatives or the organization as a whole.
  • The Lead will interview, write and edit across the full spectrum of communication tools including patient stories, news releases, brochures, newsletters, scripts, posters, presentations, etc.
  • The Lead is the lead on all content, images and overall user experience of the website using a Content Management System and basic HTML.
  • Oversees multiple social media platforms including drafting posts and choosing visuals for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  • Monitors social media platforms and responds to public inquiries and comments in a timely manner.
  • Ensures consistency of Ontario Health branding and key messaging.
  • Supports external events through the development of event work plans, media releases and photo ops, and works effectively with multiple levels of government to ensure appropriate protocol.
  • Supports government relations by establishing long-term relationships with government officials utilizing strategic planning and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Sits as a member of various committees and working groups (e.g. Ontario Health North, etc.) as a communications lead, with the ability to provide necessary updates, decisions and call-to-actions.
  • Builds relationships and works with various stakeholder groups to leverage the partners' existing communication channels to achieve communication strategies as appropriate.
  • Identifies, develops and manages new communication strategies, tools and tactics as required.
  • Development of patient, volunteer and staff stories.
  • Act as coverage for other team members as needed.

Here is what you will need to be successful:

Education and Experience
  • University degree and/or post-graduate college certificate/diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five to seven years of experience in an intermediate communications role.
  • Experience working in a health care communications role (preferred).

Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong writing, editing and proof-reading skills to draft, edit, research, and write communications products (e.g. news releases, newsletters, website content, etc.)
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
  • High proficiency in using Content Management Systems and social media platforms for the workplace
  • High proficiency in SharePoint preferred
  • Basic proficiency in photography, graphic design principles and web-based software supports (e.g. Survey Monkey, MeetingPulse, Google Analytics).
  • Ability to plan strategically and work in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to take complex medical and health care information and simplify for a general audience.
  • Experience juggling multiple priorities, meeting tight deadlines and working independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective working relationships with multiple and diverse stakeholders including healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and a variety of community health care providers.
  • Strong oral communication skills to respond to inquiries, serve as a liaison with various system representatives, and present at system tables.
  • Ability to assess communication requirements for target audiences and develop communication strategies, products and services to meet identified communications objectives as well as implement communication plans, work back schedules and event work plans.
  • Ability to speak and write other languages (other than English) that are representative of the North is considered an asset.

Location: North Region, Ontario (currently hybrid; subject to change)
