Based in Lima, Peru, the Lead, Health & Safety – Peru has the responsibility of leading the H&S function for the Peru Explorations team, ensuring continuous improvement, meets the expectations of Teck Resources Limited, Teck Exploration & Geoscience and Peru´s legal requirements. The candidate will have a solid knowledge of the mineral exploration activities carried out in Peru, including remote regions. The key to the role is to ensure that:

 

•    Exploration personnel have the understanding, training, and tools necessary to fulfill their designated H&S responsibilities,
•    Project leaders and Country Manager are supported to meet their health and safety responsibilities through guidance, advice and verification processes.
•    Project activities are carried out through compliance with applicable Peruvian Policies, Standards and Requirements, Exploration Guides, local processes and laws. 
•    The projects are supported by H&S for the processes of tendering, evaluation, selection and accreditation of contractors. It will also ensure  the supervision and support of the contractors assigned to each project throughout the process

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader who promotes strong  leadership in health, safety, and sustainability.   
  • Proactively engage and provide leadership for the exploration team to drive the implementation, verification, and  continuous improvement of H&S's management system.
  • Leads, promotes, and coordinates the implementation of H&S programs as part of H&S's corporate strategies.
  • Understands the principles of hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation, and more specifically:
    • Reviews existing processes and recommends changes as needed;
    • Ensures that risk assessment is carried out at the country level; 
    • Ensures the participation of project leaders and contractors in project-level risk assessment
    • Ensures the risk assessment at the task level by applying the processes defined by Teck Exploration and Geoscience
    • Facilitates the assessments for high potential risks using the processes defined by the corporate for the management of these risks and their subsequent review of quality and effectiveness
    • Implements and evidences the verification of critical controls defined in the corporate risk assessment and exploration processes. 
    • Promotes and secures trainings to develop skills in identifying health, safety, and environmental hazards, and works to manage associated risks in the workplace;
    • Works with project managers and leaders to implement hazard identification processes and appropriate risk mitigation measures, and reviews and modifies specific processes as needed;
    • Develops and reviews safe working procedures for the broad spectrum of exploration activities within Peru, based on the risk assessment of the activity.
    • Generates training matrices according to the exposures identified in the risk assessment. In the same way, it will manage training and control the logs generated. 
    • Defines and monitor inspection programs for each project or exploration program with exposure to high-risk activities. 
    • Performs periodic audits of work sites to ensure Teck Explorations' and corporate requirements
    • Prepare and attend corporate audits as appropriate.
    • Supports project leaders in the execution of inductions and emergency response plans, ensuring compliance with the Exploration Guidelines related to these matters.
  • Document and report all H&S incidents occurring in or related to workplaces operated by Teck Exploration and Geoscience. She/He will also lead incident investigations, implementation, follow-up and recording of corrective actions established to eliminate the probability of recurrence for the event
  • Collect, consolidate, and report to HS Exploration Management reports on proactive and reactive indicators by projects as requested.
  • Uses available management systems and tools; and promotes platforms for data capture and visualization in order to analyze trends and define action plans based on them. 
  • Maintains H&S databases, web portals, and on-premises SharePoint sites
  • Develops and manages annual H&S budgets at the country level and supports the definition of project budgets.
  • Participates in the Health and Safety Committee, drafting local protocols and supporting contract administration; 
  • Promotes occupational health and hygiene through the identification of hazards with the potential to cause occupational diseases in the short, medium and long term, managing quantitative and qualitative evaluations to identify all exposure groups in order to manage mitigation programs and measures according to corporate requirements. 
  • Maintains the country's register of legal obligations and oversees associated compliance activities

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Geosciences, Social Sciences, Business or Public Administration, Social Work or Sustainability. (Mandatory)
  • Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, and/or have completed Health and Safety training applicable to the Mining Exploration industry.
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience at H&S in exploration projects with exposure to various drilling methods, geophysical processes, remote work and other exploration activities.
  • A good understanding of the regulatory framework associated with appropriate local, national and international health and safety legislations.
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles of Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Mitigation.
  • Demonstrated auditing and inspection skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with multiple internal Teck stakeholders and external government agencies.
  • Experience in budget management and forecasting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate-level skills for Microsoft Office products.
  • English Language – Intermediate to Advanced (Mandatory)
