Reporting to the Manager, Social Responsibility, the Lead, Indigenous & Community Relations (Contract) is responsible for building and maintaining positive, and mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous leadership, representatives, and community members. The primary project focus will centre on the Bullmoose mine near Tumbler Ridge, B.C. This is a 9-month part-time contract role, with opportunity for extension. This role can be done remotely, with regular travel to the project area and surrounding communities.
T o be successful, we are looking for someone with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, as well as proficiency in the intricacies and sensitivities involved in community engagement. The position requires a self-motivated collaborator who has strong organizational, project management, and analytical skills.
In this role, you will have an opportunity to be the face of Teck, ensuring the stewardship of positive relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments, organizations and communities. You will also have the chance to collaborate with teams across our operations, contributing to the success of future projects.
Responsibilities :
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Support operational and permitting teams to prepare for external engagement with Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments, organizations, and communities
  • Enhance outreach with organizations, communities, and businesses working specifically (though not exclusively) on reclamation, biodiversity, and mine closure issues
  • Support the implementation of collaborative working groups including communications and decisions reached between management forums and field levels
  • Assist to develop business engagement and management strategies that further Teck's environmental field results
  • Contribute to social risk assessments and mitigation plans
  • Develop and track engagement strategies and plans
  • Support regulatory consultations and engagement with Indigenous and other governments including at the municipal and provincial levels
  • Analyze consultation and other regulatory requirements and processes including expected impacts, estimated benefits and risks
  • Collaborate closely with internal groups and practitioners to communicate strategy, standard methodologies, and policy developments with an emphasis on reclamation, biodiversity, and closure
  • Support the application of Teck's Indigenous Peoples Policy and Communities and Indigenous Peoples sustainability goals

Qualifications :
  • Degree in Indigenous Studies, Law, History, Social Sciences, Geography, or other related field - please note that experience will be considered in lieu of formal education
  • Minimum seven years of demonstrated ability in Indigenous and Community Relations, regulatory approvals, and/or environmental management
  • Demonstrated success working with Indigenous Nations and organizations designing, managing, and evaluating engagement plans and programs, with a detailed understanding of the Canadian Indigenous context
  • Direct knowledge of Indigenous relations and guidance such as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory process, requirements and context for resource development projects, including consultation tracking and reporting, as well as related reclamation, biodiversity, closure, and water issues
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license or equivalent
  • Training or experience in conflict resolution and negotiation would be an asset

Hourly Range: $65.00 - $70.00
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
Successful candidates must be willing to satisfy the pre-employment requirements of a pre-employment drug screen and three professional references.
