Job description

Flexible on locations across British Columbia
The Opportunity:
Our team is growing, and we have a new opportunity for a senior leader with ten or more years of experience to work in a multi-disciplinary team that works to solve complex Water Quality issues for our clients throughout Western Canada. The position is in the Environmental Management team which has one of the largest risk assessment and toxicologist teams in the BC and Yukon with more than 20 staff working in toxicology, risk assessment and environmental monitoring. The role will also connect you with our environmental assessment, permitting Water Quality and mining colleagues with opportunities for working across multi-disciplinary project teams. You should enjoy being part of a close-knit team and appreciate the benefits that a large organization can bring, including career progression, access to vast technical expertise, having a dedicated mentor, being able to participate in employee resource groups, and more.
A day in the life:
  • You are a champion of Health & Safety initiatives, being an ambassador for our Zero Harm safety culture - this is always your top priority, as it is ours
  • You stand with us in our promotion of Inclusion & Diversity, so that all of our colleagues feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work each day.
  • You are a senior leader excited to coach and develop our talented team of scientists who are responsible for everything from data collection to reporting.
  • You will provide leadership to projects teams over the entire life cycle of a project and can point to a track-record of success in the technical delivery of complex Water Quality and environmental effects monitoring projects.
  • You are a critical thinker, solution-orientated and have strong communication skills to convey the scientific work to non-scientific audiences.
  • You can support the client in their regulatory and engagement efforts with Indigenous Groups, stakeholders, and the public.
  • You will be responsible for the design and implementation of Water Quality, sediment quality, and aquatic effects monitoring programs for resource development projects throughout Western Canada and the North.

What you'll bring to WSP...
Recognizing that not everyone will tick all the boxes, here are some of the key things you will bring to the team. We encourage you to apply if you know you can make a difference:
  • University education in environmental science, toxicology, or biological sciences, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred, but a bachelor's degree with significant work experience is considered equivalent to a graduate degree.
  • Professional Registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (College of Applied Biology of British Columbia) or eligible for professional registration
  • You have ten or more years of relevant experience.
  • You have a positive and enthusiastic can-do attitude, and a willingness share your knowledge to lead technical teams and mentor staff.
  • You are self-motivated, willing to be flexible and nimble, and able to think outside the box.
  • You have clear and demonstrated communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and at all levels, including to your team, your clients, stakeholders, and regulators
  • You have an in-depth knowledge of the BC and CCME Water Quality guidelines, and their derivation, with the ability to apply that knowledge to Water Quality and sediment assessments.
  • You have a good understanding of the Environmental Assessment process in BC and experience in preparing regulatory submissions and presenting stakeholder information in open forums.
  • You have a clean Driver's Abstract and are willing to travel on occasion.
