Position Title Library Technician - Media Equipment Posting Number 02111SA Location New Westminster Campus Grade or Pay Level S - Pay Level 12 Salary Range $52,173 annually (with wage increments to a max of $58,258 annually). This regular full-time/part-time (35 hours per week) position is available starting March 4, 2024. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 1-9 - pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department's need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus. The Role
The position is a media hardware specialist, providing equipment technology, advice and training in the Learning Resources for College internal and external clients.
Responsibilities
1. Organizes daily operations of the Learning Resources Media Equipment loan service, including media use rooms and Media Lab.
a) distributes, enables, supports and troubleshoots various Media Equipment technology, including software, available from the Learning Resources for College internal and external clients.
b) assess user objectives to recommend a specific technology or a selection of media technology to produce the desired outcome. Inform users on appropriate use of equipment and resources available for loan as well as equipment technical requirements.
c) advise users on how to integrate library technology to successfully operate with CEIT installed technology in classrooms, theatres and other spaces on or off campus. May also advise internal or external users on how to integrate their own technology.
d) ongoing individual and group orientation/training sessions for students, staff, faculty and off campus clients on Library equipment hardware and software. Demonstrate software programs, create detailed manuals/instruction sheets on how to transfer video files, store files on different media, upload to a web video file sharing site.
e) assembly of components to form complete equipment systems such as multimedia transfer stations, public address systems with multi mic recording, data/video projection with audio, etc, cable or wireless connection for all devices.
2. Provides a variety of support and maintenance functions for Media Equipment hardware and software in Learning Resources.
a) monitors daily the condition of equipment resources available in the loan pool, determines whether equipment is operational as well as the probable cause of equipment or system failures, and takes appropriate corrective action.
b) troubleshoots complicated equipment configurations composed of laptop computers, audio and/or video equipment, wired and/or wireless devices quickly and effectively, possibly by phone. Includes Library classroom Smartboard, wireless keyboard issues or set up a complete alternate computer, projection and sound system on short notice.
c) research technology/equipment purchases for circulating/fixed inventory secured in study carrels and media use rooms, software programs for Library laptop computers. Evaluates and identifies areas of need for equipment hardware and researches available options, makes recommendations for purchases.
d) significant input on equipment inventory additions and deletions. Includes all necessary accessories, parts to make equipment items fully functional either circulating or fixed. Recommends any consumable items needed to maintain equipment items in satisfactory condition.
e) arrange for laptop computer re-imaging or perform self-installation of computer programs, troubleshoot login or wireless issues. Install, configure software and prepare laptop computers for College patrons. Re-set tablet computer after patron use.
f) significant liaison with CEIT technicians in several areas (laptop computers, repairs, classroom and theatre installations, technology events).
g) maintains documentation on hardware as well as software including manuals.
3. Performs all duties as required - see job 111.10 - Library Technician - Public Services.
4. Other Duties and Tasks
a) primary Learning Resources contact for off campus clients seeking to rent Media Equipment for use on campus, prepare and submit rental billing charges to Facilities.
b) conducts inventory of circulating equipment including media use rooms and media lab.
c) performs minor maintenance and repairs.
d) participates in technology meetings.
e) develops forms and documents.
SUPERVISION / DIRECTION EXERCISED : The job requires the provision of guidance and training to others (students, employees, public). Regularly works without direct supervision. May have supervisory responsibility over one or more student assistants in the absence of the supervisor. Assists with training new, existing and special projects staff and student assistants. Responsible for safety in the Library when no supervisor present
PHYSICAL ASSETS / INFORMATION MANAGEMENT : maintains integrity and confidentiality of files and computer records; assists with policy development and interpretation; gathers and reports statistics; performs inventory; maintains/monitors public use facilities and equipment; assists with emergency procedures; provides instruction and instructional support; pushes heavy carts and performs repetitive motions. Creates updates, enhances, and deletes records in the integrated library system ( ILS ), creates and maintains manual and electronic files, acquires, catalogues and processes library Media Equipment.
FINANCIAL RESOURCES : Negotiates billing disputes, collects payments, transacts sales and records on cash register, makes referrals to Finance Department, collects and reconciles money, prepares bank deposit; completes billing forms, maintains billing records and receives invoices and payments; processes invoices. Signs for library materials and supplies at the Bookstore.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
1. A minimum of a Library or Media Technician diploma from an accredited two year program plus two to three years' current related work experience in an automated integrated library system environment, preferably in a high-volume academic library. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
2. A sound working knowledge of:
- standard library techniques, vocabulary and organization, including Library of Congress Classification and bibliographic conventions, and student oriented service delivery.
- various types of Media Equipment and software used in post-secondary education.
3. A familiarity with automated circulation systems and the ability to interpret, monitor and contribute to library procedures, policies and systems.
4. Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills including written and verbal fluency in the English language.
5. A demonstrated ability to:
- speak effectively to small groups in both informal and formal settings.
- deliver training and presentations to students, faculty and the public on Media Equipment and software used in post secondary education.
- troubleshoot Media Equipment, computers, printers, and multi-functional devices.
- interact effectively and tactfully with people of various backgrounds and cultures, including students, college employees and the broader community.
- develop, establish and maintain good working relationships.
- work as an effective team member.
- collect and record information accurately.
- plan and organize work in order to meet deadlines.
- work independently with minimal supervision.
- exercise sound judgment and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- use computer applications such as Word and Excel, email and the Internet, keyboard at 45 w.p.m. and enter data accurately at an intermediate level.
- sit at a computer workstation and handle library materials for extended periods of time.
- collect, generate and report relevant statistics.
