    The role of a Village team member is to facilitate an enriched living experience for each Villager by fostering and nurturing relationships; enabling Villagers to control and manage their day; enabling feelings of safety, security & connectedness to people and things that matter to each person; establishing trusting relationships with families; enabling learning of new things, and; making meaningful contributions within The Village and surrounding communities. Our success is largely determined by the amount of joy, love and laughter experienced by each of those we serve – Villagers, staff, volunteers and local community.


  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The primary role of the Community Centre & Program Assistant to empower each Villager to achieve and sustain health and well-being, live life to the fullest, flourish and thrive, regardless of cognitive or physical limitations.

    Reporting to the Community Centre Manager, the Community Centre & Program Assistant is accountable to ensure that each Villager has opportunity to engage in meaningful activities, of interest to them, with other Villagers and the larger community. They collaborate with aCommunity Centre & Program Coordinator, Household Teams and volunteer network to deliver Life Enrichment events, activities and programs and is accountable for the following outcomes:

  • HOW YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE
    • Oakwood Community Centre operations and wellness promotion

    Our goal for the Oakwood Community Centre is to be a gathering place, promoting wellness, for all Villagers and those who support them. The Community Centre & Program Assistant will facilitate this by:

    • Providing administrative and program support to the Community Centre team.
    • Delivery of Village activities and events such as social clubs, group programs, The Village peer-support network, salon and barber shop, farm, agricultural and horticultural programs, special events and celebrations of interest.
    • Supporting the Community Centre Team in coordinating and hosting various community groups and visitors.
    • Acting as cashier and barista of The Village Café, Pub, post office, bank and grocer as required.
    • Maintaining Resident activity participation and engagement records.

    • Volunteer Programs

    Enabling older adults to volunteer facilitates improved physical and emotional well-being and promotes feeling valued and empowered by meeting new people, offering opportunities for creativity and personal growth, and having fun. Our goal is to enable such meaningful involvement of persons and groups from within and external to The Village in our routine. The Community Centre & Program Assistant will facilitate this by:

    • Enabling volunteer opportunities for Villagers within Community Centre programs and events, partnering with Household Teams to coordinate support necessary to enable meaningful participation.
    • Providing program and administrative support to The Friends of the Village.
    • Supporting The Village’s volunteer education and orientation program.
    • Supporting a Resident-directed Village Council.
    • Supporting a Family-directed Village Family Council.

    • Supporting Households

    Many of The Village activities will take place in the Community Centre, barn and outdoor spaces. We believe it equally, if not more, important that a variety of dynamic recreation and social activities occur spontaneously within each Household, aligned with the interests, talents and abilities of the people who live and work there. The Community Centre & Program Assistant will support this by:


    • Maintenance of physical, social and intellectual enrichment activity and program toolkits used by Household Teams in Villager engagement.
    • Co-facilitating education opportunities for Household Teams to learn engagement and relational skills, supporting Villager life-enrichment and meaningful communication with families.
    • In collaboration with the Household Teams, plan and host engagement activities and events between and among Households.
    • Coaching Household Teams and Village staff to achieve a Resident-directed culture, consistent with best practice in memory-care.
      • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the concepts of shared leadership and person-directed care.
      • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
      • Cashier or related experience.
      • Customer service experience.
      • Strong diplomacy skills.
      • Computer literacy.

    4. Other responsibilities will include:

    • Maintaining appropriate records and reports in accordance with The Village practices.
    • Supply and equipment ordering.
    • Receiving and organizing Community Centre, program and event stock.
    • Communicating regularly scheduled, special event and activity details with Villagers, families and stakeholders.
    • Partnering with The Village Concierge as required.
    • As an integral component of The Village Team, participation in dementia-care and best practice education.

    BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

    • Diploma in Community or Therapeutic Recreation, Social Service or Community Service Work or related field.
    • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.
    • BC “Serving it Right” Certificate.
    • Experience providing administrative support in a health, social or community service setting.
    • Excellent communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
