Job description

Purpose

Reporting to the Manager, e-Learning & Special Projects at TIES, the LINC Home Study (LHS) Instructor is responsible for the service delivery of the fully-online LINC Home Study program with up to 20 clients per week. This is done through a combination of one-on-one interaction with clients on the Zoom platform and asynchronous guidance via the online learning management system. The LHS Instructor serves a variety of clients with entry benchmarks between CLB 3-3-2-2 to 7-7-7-7.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct needs assessments to determine students’ levels of English proficiency upon entry, determining the kind(s) of instruction, themes, and materials needed.
  • Prepare, present and administer one 30-minute online lesson, per student, per week, on Zoom.
  • Lessons and activities are tailored to meet the needs of the students. This includes the use of the LINC Home Study Canada learning management system, Google Docs/Drive, and the building and provision of external supplementary materials when appropriate.
  • Conduct competency and benchmark assessments adhering to the Canadian Language Benchmarks and Portfolio Based Language Assessment to promote students to a higher level when appropriate.
  • Record each student’s weekly call details via the LHS learning management system.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly progress reports in a timely manner in January, April, July, and October each year.
  • Grade students’ self-directed activities and homework, incorporating them into the body of the weekly lesson when possible.
  • Perform other related duties of a LINC Home Study Instructor as requested by the program coordinator.

Education and Experience

The successful candidate will be located in or near the city of Calgary, and will have a Bachelor of Education or BA minimum in TESL or a related subject. At least 2 years of related work experience would be preferred, however, an equivalent combination of education and workplace experience would also be considered. Other education and experience credentials that will be assessed are:

  • TESL certificate or TESL related experience
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations or the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program
  • Extensive experience teaching online or developing materials for online learning
  • Knowledge of ESL and PBLA teaching methodology
  • Strong communication, enthusiasm, and interpersonal skills that are used to tailor each student’s learning experience
  • Ability to adjust lessons to students’ levels and needs

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
