LINC Home Study Instructor
The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) is a not-for-profit registered charitable organization that has been actively serving newcomers and low-income Calgarians since 1988. TIES' primary goal is to provide immigrants and economically disadvantaged individuals with a solid foothold in Canada and afford them the opportunities to feel belonging in their new community
Purpose
Reporting to the Manager of e-Learning and Special Projects, the LINC Home Study Instructor is responsible for the service delivery of the LINC Home Study Program (LHS). This is done through a combination of one-on-one interactions, and asynchronous guidance for clients with entry benchmarks of CLB 3-7.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate commitment to the mission, the goals and the educational philosophy of TIES
- Assess the students’ levels of English proficiency upon entry to determine the kind(s) of instruction and materials needed
- Prepare, present and administer one 30-minute online lesson, per student, per week
- Lessons and activities are tailored to meet the needs of the students. This includes the use of the pre-developed LHS Learning Management System, its resources, and external supplementary materials when appropriate
- Conduct benchmark assessments tests by using Canadian Language Benchmarks system to promote the students to a higher level when appropriate
- Record student’s call details to monitor students’ progress. Additionally, submit these call details, success stories and quarterly reports on time
- Collect student stories and provide referral guidance to their settlement needs
- Grade students self-directed activities and homework, incorporating them into the body of the weekly lesson when possible
- Perform other related duties of a LINC Home Study Instructor as requested by supervisor.

Knowledge- Knowledge of:
- Google Education Platforms (Docs, Drive, Sheets)
- Microsoft Office (emphasis on Word) and Windows Operating Systems
- Learning Management Systems (Moodle, D2L, etc.) is an asset.

- Skype, Zoom, or other VoIP tools.

Education and Experience
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Education or BA minimum in TESL or a related subject. Other education and experience credentials that will be assessed are:
- TESL certificate or TESL related experience
- Experience working with non-profit organizations is an asset
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of ESL teaching methodology
- Knowledge of various ESL activities to use in the classroom
- Flexibility to adjust lessons to students’ levels and needs
- Comfortable with using technology for teaching, e.g. Internet, skype, ESL websites.
