Job description

Reporting to the Senior Safety Advisor, Loss Prevention Officer will provide first-aid response, systems monitoring, training, orientation and administrative support and site security, thereby ensuring that the safety and security of all employees, visitors and contractors is maintained and company assets are protected. This position will be located within the Security Office.

RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE STANDARDS


  • Provide immediate first-aid response and transport to injured or sick workers or visitors.

  • Working within established guidelines, provide 24 hour security to the mine site by controlling vehicle and personal access and egress to the facility and monitoring removal of assets from the mine site.

  • Monitor site wide radio channels for proper radio etiquette and road protocols.

  • Monitor emergency systems, as required and report/react according to established guidelines.

  • Monitor the fire prevention and detection services and follow Protocol if the alarm activates.

  • As required, conduct audiometric testing, incident notification, first-aid instruction, health & safety orientation and pulmonary function testing on employees in conjunction with established procedures.

  • Assist in the maintenance of a database by entering applicable data relating to training, and safety related records.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

An Advanced First-Aid Certificate is required. Coursework or training related to security, Loss Prevention, accident investigation or training coordination is an asset.

Experience

At least one year of recent, hands-on experience in a first-aid or emergency responder position is required plus some experience in a security or Loss Prevention role. Mine rescue, accident/incident investigation or training coordination experience is an asset.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent needs to be able to:

  • handle loads over 20 kg. in weight
  • operate an emergency response vehicle
  • sit or stand for over 60 consecutive minutes
  • concentrate for over 60 consecutive minutes
  • work in environmental extremes for over 60 consecutive minutes
  • stay alert during periods of inactivity for more than 60 minutes
  • listen for quiet sounds
  • hear specific noises over background noises
  • perceive fine visual detail
  • frequently use peripheral vision
  • use fine motor skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent works at the CST Coal Mine Site on a 7 day-on/7day-off rotation that includes working weekends and holidays. The 12 hour daily schedule will include both day and night shifts. Some overtime and being on standby or ready for “call outs” may be required due to the nature of the work. (A modified work week may be considered due to operational circumstances). He/she is in an office setting approximately 80% of the time, outdoors 10% of the time and in a shop/plant setting 10% of the time and deals with the general public, employees, staff, suppliers and subcontractors. The nature of the work requires being exposed to fire, smoke, fumes, odors or chemicals in emergent situations, dangerous physical hazards such as moving machinery, and loud and continuous noise levels that require ear protection. As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre-employment drug and medical testing as per established policy. As required, personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, approved respiratory protection, clothing and gloves.
