The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship is accountable for integrated land and natural resource management, including objective setting for land and marine environments, effectively managing cumulative effects, and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.
The Regional Hydrogeologist functions is the primary regional groundwater protection expert and leader. This position oversees groundwater science, monitoring, and groundwater protection regulation compliance and supports the Water Authorizations team as a subject matter expert in Hydrogeology.
Job Requirements:
  • Degree in a related field (e.g., Engineering, Hydrogeology, Geology, Earth Science), or equivalent as accepted by the appropriate professional association and 5 years related work experience.
  • Registration or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
  • (Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional in another Canadian jurisdiction and able to transfer that membership to a BC professional association within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.)
  • Experience or specialized training in quantitative hydrogeology.
  • Experience conducting groundwater investigations, including aquifer and well characterization, testing assessment and monitoring.
  • Experience developing technical solutions, guidelines and standards for aquifer characterization.
  • Experience leading or coordinating interdisciplinary projects.
  • Experience writing technical reports.
  • Experience analysing and interpreting hydrogeological data.

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience in any of the above working in British Columbia.
  • Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous groups.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Experience managing contracts and supervising contractors.
  • Experience with the Water Sustainability Act and Groundwater Protection Regulation
  • Experience using GIS platforms and/or databases.
  • Experience developing and running numerical groundwater models such as MODFLOW, FEEFLOW, HydroGeoSphere or similar.

Provisos
  • Willing to conduct field work.
  • A valid BC Driver's license is required.
  • Willing to travel for meetings if required.

About this Position:
Currently there is 1 permanent opportunity.
This position can be worked from the following communities: Nanaimo, Victoria, Campbell River, Duncan, Port Alberni, Port McNeil, Courtenay.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
An eligibility list may be established for future temporary and/or permanent opportunities.
