Job description

Location: The Lawrie Group Bannered Stores
(Greenwood, Kingston, Middleton, Bridgetown, Annapolis, Meteghan)

The Maintenance Carpenter is responsible for performing a variety of skilled carpentry tasks in the repair, maintenance, and renovation of buildings and structures within the Lawrie Group bannered stores. You will work independently but will be part of the Lawrie Group team and represent the brand accordingly. You will ensure that all the carpentry work is completed efficiently, safely, and to a high standard.

The Maintenance Carpenter is responsible for regular scheduled maintenance of store assets and the building of new workspaces on store property. You will need to cut, fabricate, and install wooden and other material structures according to blueprint or store design. The job entails working in diverse settings to produce steady and functional infrastructure and products.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Inspect buildings, structures, and facilities to identify carpentry repair and maintenance needs.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as plumbing, repairing doors, windows, cabinets, and furniture.
  • Install and repair framing, trim work, and other outside carpentry components.
  • Conduct and install shelves, cabinets, countertops, and other fixtures as needed.
  • Repair or replace damaged woodwork, flooring, and other carpentry elements.
  • Work with the renovation and remodeling of spaces using your carpentry expertise.
  • Ensure the jobsite is safe and leave the work area clean.
  • Ensure that all work complies with building codes, safety standards, and organizational policies.
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and fleet in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Keep work equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshoot breakdowns; perform preventive maintenance; request for approval for repairs.
  • Collaborate with other staff as needed to complete projects.
  • Maintain a pleasant and professional attitude.
  • Must safely operate store equipment required for efficient yard operation including lumber carts, forklifts, pallet jacks, order pickers, banding machine, ladders, chop saw, heavy equipment, etc.
  • Be able to drive truck and trailer and other larger fleet components.
  • Be available for snow removal during winter months for store opening.
  • Ensure the truck and trailer are kept clean, organized, and stocked with necessary tools and job components.
  • Maintain an accurate record of work performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
  • Follow established procedures for requesting and managing supplies and materials.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.

Know How: (Technical, Interpersonal Skills and Knowledge Required)

  • 7+ years' experience as a carpenter in a maintenance or construction setting
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry techniques, tools, and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Good physical condition and ability to lift heavy objects and work on ladders and heights.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid drivers license, forklift, fall arrest and have a reliable transportation.
  • Driver’s abstract will be required.
  • Certification or training is a plus.
  • Knowledge of home improvement products and industry trends an asset
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Physical Demands / Requirements:

  • Lifting and Carrying- will include such items as lumber, plywood, power tools and other construction materials.
  • Bending and Stopping- will need to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel to work on various carpentry tasks.
  • Repetitive Motion- performing tasks such as hammering, sawing, drilling, and sanding can involve repetitive motions that could lead to muscle fatigue and strain, especially in the hands, arms, and shoulders.
  • Working at Heights- will need to work on ladders, scaffolding, or elevated platforms to perform tasks such as installing or repairing structures. This can involve a risk of falls and requires good balance and coordination.
  • Pushing and Pulling- will be required to move heavy objects such as equipment, materials, or furniture.
  • Operating Machinery- use power tools and machinery like saws, drills and nail guns will require hand-eye coordination.
  • Standing and Walking- may be required to stand for long periods of time and walk on various surfaces throughout the workday.
  • Working in Confined Spaces- some tasks may require working in tight or confined spaces.
  • Climate adaptability- Able to work outside in all seasons.
  • Computer Ergonomics- Ability to use a computer using proper ergonomic methods.
