Located in Orillia and reporting to the Associate Dean, the Manager GCVH/Primary Veterinarian is responsible for the overall direction and oversight of in-house animals utilized for teaching and learning within the Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Assistant Programs. The incumbent will be responsible for the review and approval of internal policies to support teaching opportunities where students engage with live animals. This is a growing program set that will continue to see expansion to meet the educational needs of students in Georgian College's School of Health, Wellness & Science portfolio. This unique repertoire of laboratory and clinical experiences provide both a student learning/teaching environment and quality preventive veterinary services to local pets in the Georgian College community. As such, the Manager GCVH/Primary Veterinarian has a dual role of ensuring clinical practices are in alignment with academic programs, policies and procedures, health regulations, as well as the standards outlined by our accrediting bodies. The incumbent has a significant leadership role in development and review of animal health protocols for use, housing, and treatment. The Manager GCVH/Primary Veterinarian upholds ideal patient care standards while ensuring optimal delivery of day to day operations of the learning environment. The Manager oversees the Clinic RVTs, locum veterinarians, and animal care support RVTs in the clinic. The incumbent would work collaboratively with the faculty and staff team in the development of existing and future strategic operations of the clinic. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Clinic Administration
  • Ensuring the professional, ethical, safe and effective operation of the GCVH and GCVH teaching spaces
  • Ensuring that clinical laboratory environments adhere to external regulations of our accrediting bodies
  • Monitoring, assessing and reinforcing compliance with clinical policies and practices, either through research/evaluation of existing practices and/or team meetings; monitors compliance with professional regulations and standards; reviews changes to regulatory standards, etc. to determine potential impact on clinical policies and procedures
  • Embracing continuous quality improvement systems by building upon traditional methods, by focusing on systems and processes and reviewing current animal health practices
  • Facilitating the promotion of the Veterinary Technician and Assistant Programs by supporting community outreach opportunities and partnerships
  • Engaging in the hiring and training process for contract veterinarians and RVTs
  • Scheduling animal care RVTs and veterinarians in collaboration with the Clinic RVTs
  • Ensuring coverage of animal care duties and emergency care while inhouse animals are on site
Clinical Protocol Development/Maintenance
  • Developing and reviewing SOPs to support progressive animal care and treatment protocols throughout the clinic
  • Reviewing and providing direction to anesthesia and pharmacological protocols for in house and publicly owned patients of the GCVH
  • Supporting the development of animal housing and enrichment protocols
  • Working with the team to regularly review and maintain procedures supporting accreditation of the Veterinary Technician Program
  • Overseeing the Controlled Drug utilization, documentation, and maintenance
  • Developing, implementing and reviewing clinic policies and procedures and ensures they are in alignment with professional standards, regulatory requirements and meet the needs of the program learning outcomes
Provision of Animal Care and Treatments
  • Providing animal support and care when on site
  • Providing surgical services for publicly owned, privately owned, and shelter owned animals
  • Working with students to oversee their provision of patient treatments and procedures
Academic Program Support
  • Supporting and reinforcing the integration of curriculum into daily clinical practices and decision-making processes
  • Collaborating with academic staff to determine future academic programming needs. Investigates and determines associated regulatory governing rules and their application in the academic clinical learning environment. Determines environmental/physical resources needs, etc.
  • Collaborating with college stakeholders (i.e. program coordinators, privacy officer) to achieve client focused care, health promotion opportunities, shared information (EMR management)
  • Mentoring students to support skills development
Human Resources
  • Managing, recruiting, hiring, orientating, mentoring employees and provides updating and/or professional development opportunities in collaboration with the Associate Dean
  • Completing clinical staff performance reviews; and responsible for performance management including supporting and responding to complaints, grievances and termination decisions
  • Recruiting, hiring, evaluating and terminating third party professionals (i.e. veterinarians). Conducting professional investigations and if necessary, takes appropriate action
  • Scheduling clinical staff ensuring operational needs are met
  • Coordinating orientation, and retraining programs for staff (ie. CPR review and update)
  • Tracking mandatory training of staff and facilitate renewal or retraining as needed;
  • Facilitating professional development planning and opportunities for staff
  • The incumbent will be designated as the Facility Director as outlined by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, which involves the use of the veterinarian's license for clinic accreditation purposes
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine recognized in good standing by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario
  • Minimum of five years' experience in small animal or shelter focused veterinary medicine plus supervisory and administrative experience
  • Experience in managing shelter environments and/or academic animal use environments
  • Regulatory leadership and auditing experience in a veterinary setting
  • Previous experience managing/operating a clinic, academic setting, or shelter as an asset
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety, Privacy, Health Records Management, Professional Regulations/Standards, WHMIS regulations
  • Demonstrate a high tolerance for interruptions and ability to work efficiently and effectively in an environment with many distractions
  • Previous experience creating and implementing policies and procedures
  • Facilitation and leadership skills to support team building and managing change and best practises
  • Progressive approach to veterinary medicine
  • Strong knowledge of veterinary protocols for pharmacological, anesthesia, environmental, and treatment purposes
  • Experience with human resources (including conflict resolution, performance management)
  • Demonstrated understanding team dynamics and demonstrated team focused approach
  • Proficient in email, word processing and spreadsheet applications, using current versions of Microsoft Office
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; interpersonal and team skills with the ability to communicate to a variety of audiences (i.e. faculty, students, staff, community clients)
  • Organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of accreditor regulations and standards of practice
