Salary Range: $46, 644 - $56, 979 based on 37.5 hours/week

Overview

Reporting to the Director of Human Rights and Equity, the Manager, Black Student Success Centre plays a pivotal role in nurturing a supportive and inclusive community for Black students at St. Francis Xavier University. This position focuses on fostering a sense of belonging, promoting community engagement, and ensuring effective day-to-day operation of the Centre. The Manager will also lead efforts in data collection and assessment to continuously improve the services offered to Black students.

The incumbent is responsible for the efficient day-to-day functioning of the Black Student Success Centre, which will provide a range of supports for Black Students while acting as a hub for the local Black community. The Manager supports other roles, including the Black Student Advisor and the Black Mental Health Counsellor in providing Africentric programming to Black Students

The incumbent will also act as a resource for the University Faculty and Staff on matters related to Black Student Success and enhance the University’s values of equity and inclusion in support of creating an environment of genuine belonging for Black Students.

To align with StFX’s strategic plan to attract and retain a diverse population of students from underrepresented groups, and to reflect that in our staff and faculty members, we are specifically seeking applicants who self-identify as members of the Black community.

Key Responsibilities

The Manager, Black Student Success Centre will play a critical role in promoting the inclusivity and belonging of all students. Highlights of the responsibilities include:

· Engage external partners and communities in promoting and sustaining relationships with African Nova Scotian/ Black communities and organizations that work to support anti-Black racism.

· In coordination with the Black Student Advisor and the Black Mental Health Counsellor the incumbent supports the organization of events that promote belonging among Black Students and within the broader community

· In partnership with Recruitment, develop a plan to facilitate pathways to StFX for Black students. Includes regular presence in communities and local high schools, liaison with African Canadian support workers and other educators and community members to reach students in their communities.

· Develops and provides faculty and staff workshops on supporting African Nova Scotian/Black Students

· Responsible for data collection and analysis related to the experiences and outcomes of Black Students at the University

· Manages day-to-day responsibilities of the centre, including functional space management, student centre staff and centre access.

· Manages student connections with relevant career development and experience opportunities.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 1-2 years of related experience
  • Experience working in a university or college environment preferred, with a focus particularly on the small, rural, undergraduate experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community. Experience working with young adults is considered a strong asset.
  • Cultural competence and a commitment to Africentric ways of knowing, being, and doing.
