About Potash
The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon.

BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.

Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for late 2026. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages.
Purpose
Based in Saskatoon, the Manger, Employee Relations (level of Director in the Canadian market) will be accountable for Employee Relations across Canada including relevant inputs in leadership development, reward, on-boarding, talent management, performance enhancement and full ownership of policies and procedures. Reporting to the Head of Human Resources Canada, this individual will deliver on the Employee Relations Strategy for Jansen and Potash by enabling a positive culture through a highly engaged workforce and visible leadership of BHP’s Charter Values.
About the Role
Principal duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Implement the Employee Relations Strategy and recommend modifications from a risk-informed perspective. Develop and implement related programs and policies that support Potash and Jansen Stage 1 in line with the Charter, Our Requirements, and Jansen Operational Strategy.
  • Ensure delivery of the detailed 5-year Employee Relations plan in support of the strategy across all HR sub-functions, and support or manage any preparation, research and analysis required to achieve the strategy.
  • Advise and train human resources professionals and leaders on regulatory requirements, policies, legislation and best practices.
  • Prepare information for use during meetings with key stakeholders including support for potential agreement negotiations, economic issues, work rules and practices, dispute resolution Human Rights complaints, wrongful dismissal complaints, and internal harassment complaints.
  • Provide advice on dispute resolution and ensure timely resolution of issues and complaints.
  • Provide expert advice to all levels of management on the proper handling of workplace issues including terminations, discipline, and disputes to ensure timely resolution.
  • Manage negotiations, provide leadership in negotiation and interpretation, and understand the meaning and the implications of decisions and actions for the labour force.
  • Represent the organization at related hearings and investigations including facilitation of negotiations of agreements in consultation with line managers.
  • Lead the Employee Relations subfunction representation in global or regional projects, defining and coordinating ER team members involvement as needed.
  • Lead the use of the risk framework to manage existing and impending risks.
  • Oversee the internal investigation cases assigned to ER according to our general framework. Ensure the process is continuously improved and reporting is timely.
Work Location
Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.
About You
  • Human Resources Experience - 15+ years of diverse Human Resources experience within a global/national industrial organization of scale. Cross functional HR experience where deep analytical skills were developed.
  • Labour Relations Expertise - Extensive knowledge of labour relations within industry in Canada, and Saskatchewan. Hands-on knowledge and experience in unionized collective bargaining, negotiations, mediation and facilitation generating win/win solutions and a reputation for maintaining positive relations with various client groups. Strong track record of strategically formulating and negotiating unionized collective bargaining strategies.
  • Industry Knowledge - This individual will ideally bring experience from the industrial sector including, but limited to, the mining, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, forestry, power/utilities, transportation and/or oil & gas industries.
  • Stakeholder Management Skills - This person will have a strong network across a diverse set of regulatory, union, association, and Employee Relations circles with a robust reputation and an excellent track record of broader stakeholder activity. Strong influencing skills with an ability to interface across the entire organization to develop and drive an overarching labour relations agenda and strategy.
  • Major Projects Experience - Experience in major capital projects spanning different phases would be considered an asset.
  • Education - Undergraduate degree in a related field (Human Resources, Labour Relations, Commerce) or equivalent experience is required. An advanced degree, such as an MBA or a Master’s, would be considered an asset. Any other relevant professional qualifications (CHRP etc.) will also be considered an asset.
