Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

This position accomplishes Homes First Society objectives by managing day to day kitchen operations within the shelter/hotel programs. Maintain community partnerships and oversee client services to ensure kitchen operations are conducted with the highest quality to ensure the health and safety of the staff and clients; as well as ensuring providing all clients with nutritious meals. In addition, this role will adhere to the mission statement, policies, and procedures at Homes First Society.

Job Description:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of all food programs and kitchen operations throughout Homes First’s portfolio. This includes but is not limited to food orders and supplies, develop and track budgets and review meal planning, meet with and oversee unionized cooks, ensure meals are healthy, nutritious, culturally-appropriate and adhere to all nutritional guidelines, schedule staff, coordinate deliveries, help recruit both supervisory and union staff for all food programs and kitchen operations, ensure Health and Safety protocols and Safe Operating Procedures are followed at all times.
  • Work closely with other Homes First departments, ensure prepared meals and all food is safely transported using the Homes First van. As well as utilizing the Homes First van to transport prepared meals from the Central Kitchen to designated housing sites and assist in the preparation of meals where necessary.
  • Contribute to the smooth and effective operations of all food programs at Homes First where necessary (ie. check refrigeration levels, safe food storage, cleanliness, etc.)
  • Transport meals and follow all safe operating procedures, delivery loading and unloading processes, ensure on-time delivery, follow routes and schedules as outlined, ensure/maintain vehicle cleanliness, and inspect functional and operational vehicle and meal program issues and report them using proper processes and procedures.
  • Work closely with the Managers of Shelters, in the Non-24 Hour and 24-Hour Housing Programs to meet the needs of shelter residents, and tenants in need of Food access.
  • Ensure team performance by conducting performance reviews; provide support to the staff team in performing tasks and duties; ensure related staff training is completed; ensure all safe operating procedures and all health and safety protocols are understood and followed, prioritize and assign responsibilities and duties to team members; and communicate job expectations.
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with relevant community, health, and government partners, by attending meetings; providing support with partnership development training; and attending stakeholders/city-wide development meetings.
  • Support staff development through training, education, conduct and/or assist with regular performance reviews and provide coaching and feedback to staff as necessary.
  • Represent Homes First at future workshops, groups, etc.
  • Provide an overview of areas for improvement and create solutions to ongoing challenges through evidence-based practices to the Director of Housing
  • Monitor and adhere to legislative requirements, such as the Collective Agreement and Homes First policies and procedures, Safe Food Handling and Health and Safety legislation.
  • Support with data collection, evaluation, and development
  • Prepare and submit reports by required dates.
  • Create and update monthly staff schedules.
  • Maintain both external and internal confidentiality.
  • Conduct regular site and department team meetings and subsequently provide supports related to decision making, meal planning and client interaction.
  • Understand the Collective Agreement and ensure that all staff work within the context of the Collective Agreement.
  • Orient team members as needed.
  • Work outside of regular hours occasionally, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of safe food handling experience
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and a current Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Foods and their preparation and knowledge of operation and care of kitchen equipment
  • Knowledge of Shelter Standards food requirements an asset
  • Experience in working in communities with marginalized persons living with mental illness and/or addictions an asset
  • Valid full G-Class Ontario Driver’s License with no suspension and/or speeding tickets
  • Clean driver’s abstract – provided by Service Ontario
  • 2+ years of driving experience
  • Current certificates in First Aid/CPR an asset
  • Able to lift boxes up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to problem solve and provide support, including the ability to develop systemic solutions to how new and existing work is completed
  • Familiarity with facilitating trainings/groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team to integrate teams’ work with that of other teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work with 2SLGBTQ communities including demonstrated experience integrating anti-racism, anti-oppression and intersectional values and principles into daily practice
  • Ability to be self-directed, work independently and manage a varied workload
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, decision making, conflict management, critical thinking, and organizational skills
  • Highly developed understanding of and ability to communicate appropriate professional boundaries
  • Experience with conflict resolution and well-developed de-escalation skills an asset
  • Commitment to social justice principles and an understanding of the intersection of gender, race, sexuality, and class
  • Ability to develop and execute plans to achieve functional goals
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to access and use a variety of information system tools
  • Experience working in a unionized setting and knowledge of the Ontario Employment Standards Act an asset
  • Demonstrated experience with overdose prevention and response; as well as knowledge of applicable legislation and government policies as related to overdose and harm reduction services an asset
  • Working in an environment where there may be smoke is required.
  • The successful applicant must provide a criminal record check that is satisfactory to Homes First Society
