Job description

Job Purpose

The Manufacturing Engineer will be involved in new product development projects, drive process and design improvements, and assist with research and development initiatives. Working closely with the design/drafting team, they will collaborate to conceptualize ideas and conduct thorough testing. They will also be involved in revising drawings, bill of materials, and operating procedures, while partnering with production to identify process gaps, ensure product quality, and streamline builds. Additionally, they will liaise with the parts and warranty team to address service parts needs, conduct warranty/failure analysis, and troubleshoot issues.

Duties and Responsibilities

Safety and Compliance:
  • Prioritize safety and promote a safety-oriented culture within the department.
  • Assist with and assess Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and safety audit scorecards, implementing corrective actions for equipment and processes.
  • Drive ergonomic and safety projects to improve workplace safety.

Collaboration and Improvement:
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify opportunities for enhancing safety, quality, productivity, and cost efficiency.
  • Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout and manufacturing operations.
  • Work with the design team to develop specifications, designs, or sketches for machines and components.

Research and Development:
  • Assist with or lead research and development (R&D) project scoping and budgeting.
  • Aid in product qualification and the development of end-of-line testing procedures.

Design and Manufacturing:
  • Prepare layouts of machinery, tools, plants, or equipment.
  • Assist in the design, development, testing, or manufacturing of machinery.
  • Conduct failure analyses, document results, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Design molds, tools, dies, jigs, or fixtures for manufacturing processes.

Process Improvement and Standardization:
  • Manage capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects and charters.
  • Develop or assist with the creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and departmental procedures/standards.
  • Work with production to develop quality processes, tooling/fixturing, and documentation on the production floor.
  • Drive process and design standardizations.

Engineering Standards and Documentation:

  • Drive the organization towards engineering standardizations.
  • Review Engineering Change Notices (ECN) changes prior to release.

Qualifications

Education & Training
  • Completion of an engineering degree from an accredited institute.
    Registration with APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) with a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) status is preferred.

Experience
  • Possess 5 to 10 years of relevant work experience, demonstrating strong skills, knowledge, and expertise in the field.
  • Previous experience in a leadership role, specifically as a process and technical leader within a manufacturing, heavy equipment, or industrial environment, is highly valued.

T
echnical Knowledge
  • Proficiency in computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Advanced understanding of engineering fundamentals and principles, with the ability to apply them to enhance tooling, processes, and material flow.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical concepts, encompassing the design, usage, repair, and maintenance of machines and tools.
  • Familiarity with raw materials, production processes, quality control methods, cost analysis, and other techniques utilized to optimize the efficient manufacturing and distribution of goods.
