Job description

Mechanical Maintenance Technician

We are looking for a dynamic and creative Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join our facilities maintenance team. This full-time, permanent position reports to the Manager - Facilities Maintenance and is accountable for the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems equipment and facilities, including plumbing, HVAC equipment, boilers, chillers, pumps and purified water systems. As a member of a diverse team, the successful candidate must be a team player and strong collaborator, and also have the ability to work independently and troubleshoot issues as they arise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Investigate and resolve heating, ventilation, air conditioning and plumbing complaints and work orders by identifying the issue, correcting the problem and documenting the repair in the CMMS system
  • Complete preventative maintenance tasks and repairs on various building equipment and infrastructure including HVAC systems, washroom and plumbing fixtures, mechanical systems, natural gas, drinking water and kitchen equipment
  • Perform regular checks and inspections of HVAC & plumbing systems, document system parameters and report abnormal conditions to management
  • Carry out installations, troubleshooting and repairs of various service equipment on campus using trade knowledge, skills and experience to ensure proper operation of building services
  • Determine impact of required work, obtain parts, communicate with stakeholders and tenants, co-ordinate major repairs to minimize service interruptions, ensure proper system operation before completing task
  • Assist in developing preventative maintenance programs, evaluate effectiveness of systems and equipment, and make recommendations for improvement to ensure maximum service life
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts or other specifications; locate and diagnose trouble in the building systems or equipment
  • Compile and maintain all information and documentation relevant to all completed work
  • Recommend and maintain inventory of spare parts
  • Ensure that all work is performed in full compliance with Standard Operating Procedures, work instructions, relevant codes and standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Trade certification in a technical field such as: plumbing, millwright, gas fitter, HVAC refrigeration mechanic, etc., preferred. Candidates with a Building Operations diploma will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years hands-on trades experience in the service, repair, operation and troubleshooting of various mechanical systems and equipment such as: HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, central steam generation, pumps, exhaust fans, refrigeration equipment, plumbing fixtures/equipment, hot water heating and their related controls in a commercial/industrial environment
  • In-depth knowledge of building systems and equipment as well as building and plumbing code
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical and electrical drawings. AutoCAD experience is considered an asset.
  • Computer literate with experience using software programs of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good organization and communication skills
  • Valid Class “G” license required
  • Must be willing to provide a criminal and vulnerable sector background check
