Description

Keeping Ontario’s Legislative Assembly running smoothly takes many talented people, doing many different jobs—from camera operators and committee clerks, to purchasing officers and researchers. The Office of the Assembly is dedicated to serving Ontario’s Parliament.

Together, we provide non-partisan administrative and procedural services to all MPPs, as well as operational support for the daily activities of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The Legislative Library Branch of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, located in Toronto, ON, is looking for a Metadata Services Technical to join our Metadata Services team. This role is a part of a team responsible for providing accurate records and access to the Library’s electronic and traditional format collection and for monitoring and acquiring Ontario government documents.

What You’ll Do

You’ll act with integrity to:

  • Create original descriptive and derived cataloguing and authority records for print and digital government documents and commercial publications following international standards, such as RDA and MARC 21, and in-house policies
  • Assign subject headings using LCSH and CSH
  • Create CODOC classification numbers and verify Dewey numbers
  • Edit bibliographic & authority records and modify the holding records to reflect added copies for both monographs and serials
  • Download from the internet and archive to the library’s digital repository selected Ontario government monographs and serial issues from the internet and archive to the library’s digital repository based on the collection policy
  • Determine the choice and form of access points to ensure uniformity and consistency of headings, and create and review authority records for accuracy
  • Assist with the application of metadata standards to Assembly information repositories and assets.

You’ll support our collaboration as you:

  • Are a key member of the team responsible for producing the Monthly Checklist of Ontario government documents
  • Alternate the responsibility of assigning ISBNs and ISSNs to Ontario government document with your co-workers
  • Monitor a variety of sources such as websites and social media on a daily basis to identify new born-digital Ontario government publications

How You Qualify

You demonstrate excellence through your:

  • Completion of a 2 year Library Technician program (or equivalent) and previous work experience in an automated cataloguing environment
  • Familiarity with ExLibris’s Voyager or Alma systems is an asset
  • Working knowledge of government publications as well as library and bibliographic metadata and encoding standards such as RDA, AACR2, MARC21, LCSH and Dewey Decimal Classification
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills, in addition to the ability to work within teams to solve problems, share and communicate knowledge
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills

Salary Range: $54,809 to $74,538 per annum

The Office of the Assembly is currently in a flexible workplace pilot program. The program permits employees in certain positions to work up to a maximum of 2 days per week for some of their regular scheduled hours from a mutually agreed upon location away from the office without compromising the efficiency and effectiveness of the Office of the Assembly business or overall service delivery. Employees that are able to participate in the program understand and agree that they must be available, when requested, to be onsite as required and, as such, are required to maintain proximity within commuting distance in Ontario from the Assembly’s formal place of business at the Legislative Precinct in Toronto, Ontario. Employees may be required to return to work in the Legislative Precinct full-time as deemed by the Assembly.
