If you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for Shielded Facilities (SF) Building 300 (B300) Nuclear Operations Technician/Technologist (Tech). The Ops Tech operates WL Nuclear Facilities (WLNF) building’s (primarily, but not limited to SF/B300) systems in support of the WL site decommissioning mandate. The Ops Tech authorizes work permits, conducts and documents safety inspections, and manages incoming and outgoing waste. Can you see yourself filling this role? Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifying management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.

What will you be doing?

· Identifying and planning of necessary maintenance work on facility systems.

· Authorizing work permits and providing oversight of work being performed in assigned areas to ensure the work is done safely in compliance with the applicable regulations so as to maintain the planned integrity of building infrastructure.

· Ensuring systems to be worked on by other personnel (decommissioning, maintenance, etc.) are safely de-energized and isolated in accordance with the CNL Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedure.

· Operating building active exhaust systems (starting and stopping fans, adjusting dampers, etc.) to maintaining radiation safety zoning.

· Operating building systems such as the Hot Cells, radiation monitoring systems, building cranes, waste compactors, distilled water systems, sump drainage systems, building electrical infrastructure (where qualified), various pumps and other machinery included in the operation of a radioisotope laboratory / Hot Cells Facility.

· Conducting and recording operating system tests and inspections.

· Contributing to the writing and maintenance of high quality documents and records describing facility operations, maintenance and unplanned events. Maintaining clear written data in log sheets and operational daily log book.

· Clearly communicating status of Site Operations equipment and processes to the Senior Ops Tech.

· Communicating clearly and effectively with other departments; Waste Management, Radiation Protection, Security, Trades, Transport and other support personnel.

· Initiating with good judgement flow of work and maintaining accuracy of records.

· Preparing, reviewing, and revising Operating Procedures or Instructions for SF/B300 Nuclear systems and processes.

· Identifying and reporting any real or potential safety hazards; wearing all safety equipment related to your position as well as participating in all safety-training offered through the facility.

· Adhering to Workplace Safety and Health procedures, WHIMIS program; keeping current with practices; working in a prudent and safe manner and informing other employees if they are using unsafe work practices or equipment.

· Performs testing and inspections as dictated by the WLRP Decommissioning Licence and Licence Conditions Handbook.

· Sharing learned knowledge and skills with peers.

· Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.

· Maintaining professionalism while having a questioning attitude.

· Other duties as assigned by manager.

What we are looking for:

· Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of three (3) years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.

· Hold a relevant technician/technologist diploma from a recognized college, and have a minimum of three (3) years relevant Nuclear Facilities Operations experience, or

· Hold an Interprovincial (Red Seal) Trade certificate of qualification, and have a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience in Nuclear Facilities Operations, or

· Completed Grade 12 education or equivalent, and have a minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in Nuclear Facilities Operations.

· Mechanical aptitude with the ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.

· Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems with facility equipment and systems is essential.

· Possess mature work ethics and demonstrate integrity.

· Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.

· Exceptional organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize is required.

· Skill and familiarity with computer software packages such as Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, or aptitude to learn such programs is desirable.

· Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and produce legible records of measurements or other observations.

· Punctual, dependable and safety-minded.

· Conscientious about accuracy; detail-oriented with the ability to meet tight deadlines.

· Ability to understand detailed information is essential.

· Highly motivated, demonstrates responsibility, and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work.

· Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders including provincial, federal, and jurisdictional regulators (CNSC, IAEA), and contractors.

· Ability to work in respiratory protection gear and other Personal Protective Clothing & Equipment (PPC&E).

· Ability to work extended hours and off-normal work shifts as required to support Decommissioning/Project needs.

· Must be prepared to carry the on-call pager and attend off-hours call-ins when required.

· Willingness to acquire a good working knowledge of the SF/B300 facility systems and operations. This position is on a career progression scale, and as such, incumbents are expected to take on added responsibilities as they gain experience. (e.g. off-hour work permit authorization).

· Possess or be willing to obtain a working knowledge of the following CNL support/compliance programs as they relate to facility operations including Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Occupational Health and Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness.

· Applicant must obtain a Radiation Protection Group 2 status and successfully demonstrate the ability to perform the assigned work activities.

Working Conditions:

· Environment demands high vigilance to alarms, lights, and signals as a safety requirement.

· Periodically involves working in full respiratory and all other prescribed PPE&C in areas of high radioactive contamination.

· Periodically involves working in hot/cold, noisy, and/or confined space environments.

· Environment demands high level of concentration at times to ensure procedures are correctly followed to prevent unsafe conditions from occurring (eg. servicing Instrument Air equipment without tripping Active Exhaust Ventilation equipment).
