Our business:
Ontario Flora Native Plant Nursery is a smaller greenhouse nursery with a huge variety of wild native plants. We also offer landscape design, environmental restoration, and community greening consult. We support and create community greening initiatives with wild plants. Our native plant nursery is located in Grey-Bruce north of Toronto. Our work can be throughout Southern Ontario.
Who we need:
For those who want to work outside among the birds and bees, and definitely lots of species of wild plants! Great way to learn about nature, and horticulture in a growing nursery in Grey-Bruce. We are looking for a candidate who likes to learn, is mentally sharp and physically able. An asset would be horticulture and gardening experience, however being keen with limited experience, please still apply. For one candidate, interest in doing a bit of administration could be an asset to us.
Position Responsibilities:
Nursery and Landscape Technician 90%
- Potting up, splitting, plants, organizing and preparing plants for sale, moving plants from or to greenhouse, preparation for shipping plants to retailers, packing trailers.
- Although some candidates may be just beginning to learn native plants, we are looking for assistants who are eager to learn horticulture, and are keen to begin to learn native species
- Later spring, assisting in coordinating work in garden areas and ecosystem restoration sites at the nursery by maintaining, watering and weeding gardens
- Landscape architectural drafting (CAD) skills are not required but an asset, work can be given as per skill level and interest
- Collecting seed, drying and stratifying seed for nursery propagation
- Assists in installing landscape design and ecosystem restoration projects at locations such as public parks, residential or commercial properties, churches, schools
- Role will include occasional short term day trips out of Grey-Bruce
Administration , (for one or more candidate we are hoping who likes admin.) 10%
- Computer skills, word processing, spreadsheets, file sharing, light bookkeeping
- Some assisting marketing, sales, and project organizing administration
Qualifications and Experience:
- Working toward a relevant diploma or degree (Landscape Design, Architecture, Horticultural, Biology, Environmental Studies or Science, Agriculture, Landscaping) or the equivalent job experience is an asset, but not required
- Reliability, leadership skills, friendliness and time management are needed
- No ‘hardscape’ construction is needed for the position however the ability to lift heavier landscape objects over 40 pounds is required
- Prior experience, familiarity, and interest in physical jobs outdoors in a variety of temperatures and weather is required
Eligibility requirements:
At least one of these positions will be funded by the youth employment grants. For at least one of these positions, the following applies:
- For one candidate, up to 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been granted
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number, be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
Job Type and Duration:
Full-time seasonal (40 hrs)
Part-time seasonal now until – June 15 2-3 days (16-24 hrs), subject to review if this position is able to continue on longer than June.
