JOB DESCRIPTION

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Educational Consultant

WorkplaceNL is seeking an OHS Educational Consultant to work as a valued team member in the Prevention Services Department. You will be responsible for the design, development, delivery and evaluation of new and existing educational programs in occupational health and safety.

The OHS Educational Consultant is a member of an education team that provides innovative leadership and works collaboratively with internal and external clients and partners, to deliver effective health and safety education to stakeholders. As a safety professional and leading educator, you will be responsible for the design and delivery of education programs that are based on research, best practice, evaluation data and learner need.

Role Responsibilities

  • Writing curriculum content, including technical content for web-based learning.
  • Developing and facilitating workshops and webinars and creating a variety of education material for learners.
  • Liaising with other education partners to build health and safety education capacity and opportunities for workers, employers and the general public.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Educational requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, as well as a degree in Education, preferably with a focus in adult education, curriculum design and development or learning technologies.

Work experience:

  • Three years' proven experience in the development and delivery of educational programs in occupational health and safety, or relevant field.
  • Experience in development and delivery of structured learning plans, presentations, courses and workshops.

Knowledge-based requirements:

  • Thorough understanding of alternative curriculum and program development and presentation models, as well as a general knowledge of e-learning.
  • Knowledge in the areas of health and safety legislation, including: The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act, 2022, and Regulations, policies and procedures; the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and the Canada Labor Code.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS, First Aid, CSA and ACGIH.

Soft skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and business acumen.
  • Demonstrated facilitation and structured team building skills.
  • Ability to engage stakeholders in learning technical, specialized content.
  • Well-developed organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good judgement and strong decision-making abilities.

Conditions of employment:

  • Attainment of a professional safety designation is required for this position, given the high level of technical and specialized knowledge required in occupational health and safety (for example: CRSP, CHSC, or other acceptable safety designation).
  • Extensive travel is required in this position; thus along with the ability to travel, a valid driver's license and a vehicle are required.

What success looks like in this role

  • Having a direct impact on the development and promotion of best practice models in workplaces in the province. The impact will be a reduction in frequency and duration of workplace injury and illness, which will reduce injury costs and claims for all stakeholders.

Experience and an educational equivalency may be considered.
