Department Head & Online/Face-to-Face Instructor - Optician Program

Applicant must be a practicing Licensed Optician in British Columbia.

Stenberg College is seeking a Licensed Optician for our Department Head and Online/Face-to-Face Instructor to lead the department and prepare future Opticians in our Optician Program!

This program ensures that students gain a comprehensive education in the areas of eyeglass dispensing, contact lens fitting and automated refraction. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal communication, customer service and professional practice. This program prepares students to successfully complete the national licensing exam.

POSITION: Department Head & Online/ Face-to-Face Instructor

COURSE: LicensedOptician Program

LOCATION: Surrey

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full Time- 40 hours per week.

COURSE DELIVERY SCHEDULE: 25 hours of teaching per week and 15 hours of Department Head

COMPENSATION: $92,000-$100,000 per year

Qualifications:

  • A certificate/diploma/degree related to the field of program delivery/ instruction;
  • Current Practitioner in the assigned program area with a minimum of 5 years of applied work experience in combination with a minimum of two years of professional experience in leading or working in a faculty development, teacher training, and/or instructional development role;
  • 2+ years of experience teaching adult learners;
  • Working towards completion of an Adult Education Credential;
  • Specialized training/education in Educational Technologies is preferred – Moodle, Collaborate;
  • Curriculum Development experience is an asset;
  • A clear criminal record check;
  • Excellent written and communication skills;
  • Ability to perform moderate computer functions. Proficient in using email, managing files, recording and reporting grades electronically, and using computer applications including word processors, spreadsheets, internet browsers and web search engines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Didactic and Lab Faculty Support

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in faculty interviews.
  • Deliver orientations and training for new faculty.
  • Schedules and staff lab instructors and creates lab block-specific schedules, where applicable.
  • Facilitate Faculty Meetings to keep faculty informed and discuss challenges and goals.

Curriculum

  • Identifies curriculum updates required in consultation with the Curriculum, Learning, and Teaching Specialist, Faculty, and/or other SMEs.
  • Ensures contracted SMEs remain on target to meet project expectations, especially by providing guidance around the scope and accuracy of the content.
  • Review deliverables submitted by contracted SMEs.
  • May take on the role of SME and complete project deliverables themselves (to be compensated additionally when the work exceeds the Department Head’s weekly hours). In these cases, another SME must be identified to complete the peer review.

Student Success

  • Assists the instructors and/or Student Success Coordinators with decisions surrounding informal grade appeals or any exceptional academic circumstances, as requested.
  • Attends Program Schedule Review Meetings 3-4 months prior to each new cohort start date.
  • Serves as an SME for escalated student appeals and disputes, as requested.

Practice Education & Industry Relations

  • Evaluates host site suitability for new and existing practicum sites.
  • Supports Student Placement Coordinators with practicum assignments.
  • Identifies Industry Partners that would be a positive addition to our Program Advisory Committees.
  • Supports Industry Relations (IR) Team with Industry Partnership opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the Student Placement Coordinator, reviews host site list.
  • Serve as an SME in practicum monitor interviews.
  • Assists the practicum monitors and Manager of Practice Education with student success.
  • Serves as an SME in annual Practice Education (PE) Handbook reviews and updates.

Leadership

  • Embraces students, host sites, and employers as customers of Stenberg College.
  • Delivers at minimum 1 didactic course and 1 applied/lab course (where applicable) and practice education experience per fiscal year and ensures the highest level of student satisfaction (to be compensated additionally outside of the Department Head’s weekly hours).
  • Reviews graduate outcomes.
  • Provides the Alumni Services Coordinator with industry-specific insights.
  • Review End of Course and End of Program student evaluations and follow up as needed.
  • Review feedback and trends from surveys.
  • Submits proposals and budget requests to the Director of Academics (didactic delivery), and Industry Relations Manager (practice education).
  • Works with the Marketing and Admissions departments to promote the program to potential students, industry stakeholders, regulators, and/or agents (to be compensated additionally outside of the Department Head’s weekly hours).
  • Reviews the needs of the program in consultation with Faculty, and Program Advisory Committees, and based on student feedback.
  • Accomplishes other projects and initiatives inherent in a Department Head role or assigned by the Vice President of Academics, Director of Education Delivery, Director of Practice Education/Industry Relations.

Stenberg College provides Instructors with a full curriculum for each course. A thorough orientation would take place prior to stepping into the online delivery classroom. Ongoing In Services and Teaching Support are providing. Prior teaching experience is an asset.
