Job description

As Outfitting Specialist, you will be responsible for a defined range of whole-ship integration activities, including outfit systems and compartment design, ensuring compliance with all relevant processes and requirements. More specifically, you will:

  • Apply knowledge and experience of naval or commercial ship outfit systems to support system and spatial integration issues with other departments.
  • Design and operate outfit elements, including deck coverings, coatings, insulation and linings, accommodation and wet spaces, medical services, ship access and escape (doors, hatches, ladders, etc.), evacuation and rescue, removal routes, commissariat, galley and laundry, offices, stores (including refrigerated stores) and workshops, with awareness of human factors and complying with regulations for damage control and portable firefighting, equipment procurement packs and rule sets (defined standards, IACS, compartment and product safety).
  • Produce layout drawings for outfit compartments for review by stakeholders and correctly model these spaces.
  • Update compartment data to ensure it correctly presents the baseline design.
  • Engage in general business and other design and integration activities, in support of maturing the design, as directed by lead outfitting engineer.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of estimating and provide support in the estimating bid process.
  • Perform material take-offs from supplied drawings.
  • Prepare technical equipment specifications; develop designs in line with all specifications and standards, and coordinate with suppliers to ensure delivery to the agreed specifications.
  • Produce Procurement Pack documentation.
  • Coordinate with systems engineers and designers on the integration of outfit systems.
  • Support and attend FATs, HATs, and SATs during the build, commissioning, and trials phases.
  • Support acceptance activities for outfit facilities and equipment.
  • Support HAZIDs, design, zonal and safety reviews.
  • Develop ship design specifications and carry out activities in line with specifications and all quality/technical standards, examples being development of packages and arrangements.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and modifying outfit processes and procedures in response to technical developments and operational needs.
  • Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the design of improvements.
  • Contribute to process improvement within the operational and/or engineering team to deliver continuous improvements in quality, cycle time and asset utilization.
  • Liaise with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters.
  • Review, check and sign off calculations/documents completed by outfit engineers.
  • Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.
  • Contribute to engineering team decisions to support the effective performance of the team.
  • Answer technical queries about own work within the level of knowledge and competency.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a similar position
  • Good experience in marine engineering or related industry.
  • Good experience in an outfit ship design environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant education (atout).
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to management and peers.
  • Understanding of detail design requirements as immediate client in the engineering lifecycle.
  • Experience with CAD software, such as AutoCAD or FORAN would be an asset.
  • Trained in occupational health and safety or fire prevention.
  • Bilingual (French and English). Proficiency in English is required for this position, as the incumbent will be required to interact with our English-speaking clients, partners, and suppliers;
  • Successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the federal government’s Contract Security Program.
