Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the seasonal position of Overnight Camp Cook with Adventure Earth Programs in Recreation Programming, Parks & Recreation.

Two successful applicants will be responsible for planning, organizing, and cooking meals for participants at the Adventure Earth Programs' Overnight Camps. In conjunction with the Camp Direction, Menus are set according to traditional program needs and objectives, are youth-friendly, sustainable, and budget-conscious. Camp Cooks will also oversee the management of inventory, food costs and purchasing.
Successful applicants will be required to work for one and a half months and live on site and are compensated as outlined below. On-site accommodations and meals are provided during program times only.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Planning menus, preparing, and serving meals and snacks for groups of 35-65 participants and staff in a Overnight Camp setting
  • Ensuring meals and snacks are nutritious, high quality, appealing, and appropriate for all participants being served, including individuals with specific dietary needs (i.e. diabetic, vegetarian, allergies, etc.)
  • Maintaining purchasing records, inventory, and food budgets
  • Overseeing and ensuring all food handling and health & safety standards are maintained at all times
  • Completing all dishes and full kitchen clean up related to food preparation (cooks are not responsible for staff or campers’ personal dishes)
  • Working as a team with a second cook to complete all tasks
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
  • Current Food Handlers Certificate
  • Experience in large volume cooking
  • 1 year + of Culinary education an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
  • First Aid Certification an asset
  • Experience in Camp Cooking/camp life an asset
  • Experience in modifying menus to meet specific needs an asset
  • Experience working with youth an asset
  • Kitchen management experience an asset
  • Access to a reliable vehicle an asset
Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
  • Applicants must be willing to attend all orientations/training sessions (dates to be determined)
  • Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
  • Transportation to and from camp is the candidates responsibility. Carpooling may be arranged
  • Accommodations (single room) and meals provided
  • Accommodations include indoor showers with hot water
Supervision
  • Camp Cooks are supervised and mentored by an experienced cook, who has been working at camp for over 10 years
  • The Camp Director has had their Nova Scotia food safety certificate and has overseen the operations of the kitchen for several years
  • The Camp Director has done large group cooking and managed the cooking for many years and has developed many policies, procedures and processes that will help guide the cooks.
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry Check and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion. Interviews, testing, and in-person recruitment activities are being conducted in adherence with current COVID-19 Public Health protocols.

WORK STATUS: Casual, seasonal, Beginning in May, plus training (Virtual, e-learning and in person (May/June)
HOURS OF WORK: An average of 35 hours for 12 week including some weekend work for the months of May and June.

SALARY: Non-Union; $19.20 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay) - Anticipated wage as of April 1st, 2024
WORK LOCATION: Camp Mockingee, 160 Smeltzer Rd, Windsor, NS
