Work environment
Parks Canada is responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas, and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
Park wardens play a key role in supporting the Parks Canada mandate by providing law enforcement services focused on the protection of natural and cultural resources, public education and ensuring quality visitor experiences. They are responsible for enforcing all legislation related to Parks Canada’s full mandate on all lands and waters it administers.
Parks Canada is looking to hire experienced law enforcement officers to become park wardens. Park wardens are specialized in, and dedicated to, law enforcement. They are peace officers within the meaning of the Criminal Code, and as such they have the powers, duties and protection provided by law to peace officers. They are expected to meet high standards of behaviour which are above those of other employees, both on and off duty, in line with the Park Warden Code of Conduct. Park wardens wear a distinctive uniform and carry personal protective equipment, including a sidearm, a defensive baton and OC spray (“pepper spray”). Their duties involve all facets of law enforcement work including conducting investigations, taking statements, searching, seizing, arresting, preparing court briefs and giving evidence during trials.

Intent of the process
This process will be used to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff positions with various tenures, locations, language requirements or language profiles for various future permanent and/or temporary vacancies within the Law Enforcement Branch.
As of February 15, 2021, there is one (1) full-time, year-round indeterminate position at Rouge National Urban Park in the Greater Toronto Area and one (1) full-time, year-round indeterminate position at Pukaskwa National Park in Nipigon or Marathon, Ontario. New vacancies across Canada regularly become available and we are looking for experienced officers to fill these positions.
**The first pull of candidate applications could happen as early as March 1, 2021, to staff positions of various language requirements. Successful candidates will undergo intensive training in spring 2021. **

EDUCATION
EDU1: Successful completion of post-secondary education with a diploma or degree in a field related to the position. An acceptable combination of education and applicable experience as an armed peace officer may be considered for the post-secondary education requirement.
EDU2: Successful completion of either a recognized Canadian Natural Resources Enforcement Training Academy program to become an armed conservation officer or equivalent, or a recognized Canada Police Training Academy program.

EXPERIENCE
EX1: Significant* experience working in a job related to law enforcement work as an armed (sidearm carrying) peace officer. Must be a peace officer as defined in section 2 (c) or (e), of the criminal code or as defined as per provincial, territorial or federal designations to perform law enforcement duties in public peace or resource conservation responsibilities;
EX2: Experience working in collaboration with various internal or external law enforcement partners.
- Significant is defined as the depth and breadth normally gained over 2 continuous years or 24 months total of active work if seasonal.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
AEX1: Experience conducting large and complex investigations;
AEX2: Experience travelling and/or conducting law enforcement duties in the backcountry (e.g. skis and snowmobiles), in front-country (e.g. on foot for long hikes, on ATV, and on bikes), on water (e.g. self-propelled and/or motorized vessels) and on horseback.
Conditions of employment
- Obtain and maintain a secret security clearance. Your security clearance must be maintained throughout your employment as park warden and throughout your employment with Parks Canada. As peace officers, park wardens must have no criminal record on file. Candidates will be asked for a misconduct or performance disclosure.
- Successfully pass a pre-employment medical exam and periodic medical checks in accordance with Parks Canada’s occupational health monitoring requirements.
- Successfully pass a psychological evaluation ** to assess suitability to perform law enforcement duties and carry a sidearm.
- Successfully pass a physical ability test and maintain an approved standard of physical abilities related to the duties of the position.
- Obtain and maintain a St-John’s Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate or equivalent and CPR Level C certificate (Wilderness First Aid where required).
- Successfully complete the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.
- Possess or obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license for the province/territory applicable to this offer of employment (emergency vehicle class if required).
- Possess or obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card.
- Obtain and maintain Parks Canada law enforcement certification.
- Required to carry a sidearm and other personal protective equipment.
- Required to undertake training to maintain or upgrade knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
- Required to wear the issued park warden uniform and protective clothing, in accordance with the Parks Canada Uniform Policy.
- Required to travel for extended periods, sometimes to remote locations by various modes, and on short notice. As such, you will be subject to the Parks Canada Travel Directive.
- Required to work irregular hours, overtime, shifts and/or weekends, and/or statutory and provincial/territorial holidays. Compensation will be as prescribed in the applicable Collective Agreement and/or Terms and Conditions of Employment applicable to you.
- Required to work and/or travel in a variety of terrains and degrees of isolation for various periods in all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time.
- Required to be assigned to all types of law enforcement activities and be assigned to a temporary workplace in any part of the country in order to meet law enforcement needs.
**Please note that results from psychological assessments conducted at Parks Canada's request as part of a competition to fill park warden or park warden-supervisor positions are valid for two (2) years. As a result, if you received a "does not meet" rating at a psychological assessment as described above, your application will be automatically rejected.
You must possess at least two (2) years of significant law enforcement experience as an armed peace officer who has successfully completed training in either a recognized Canadian Natural Resource Enforcement Training Academy or recognized Canadian Police Training Academy. Please make sure to provide all relevant information so that you can be assessed against the required criteria, otherwise your application will not be assessed.
Successful completion of the Parks Canada Agency Experienced Officer Training Program, (EOTP) is a condition of your offer. The EOTP is a mandatory 4 to 6-week course offered in a location to be confirmed at a later date, and is tentatively scheduled to take place in the spring of 2021. More information will be provided regarding the EOTP to candidates who meet the identified selection criteria and who accept a conditional offer of employment.
