Parks and Facilities Labourer (Seasonal)

The Township of Springwater, located in the heart of Simcoe County, is a mixed urban/rural municipality with growing urban settlements and a prosperous agricultural sector. The municipality is currently recruiting for one (1) seasonal, full-time position of Parks and Facilities Worker.

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Parks or delegate, the Parks and Facilities Labourer will provide maintenance at various municipal facilities and perform parks labour duties.

Position Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the position are:

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles
  • Operation of ¾ ton to 2 ton trucks equipped with snow plow and sander/salter equipment for snow removal of Township owned and operated facilities, parking lots and laneways.
  • Operate snow removal equipment and other vehicles safely.
  • Perform winter maintenance including facility walkways, entrance ways and emergency exits using shovels, walk behind snowblowers, and sanding/salting spreading equipment.
  • Perform daily checks on vehicles and equipment, including documentation of any issues and daily regulated log documentation
  • Carrying out pre-trip inspections on all equipment.
  • Operation of hand / power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • General seasonal maintenance duties (limb trimming, site checks, garbage / recycling collection).
  • Maintain a safe work environment by taking necessary precautions and applying safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and Township policies
  • Maintain proper electronic and/or written records of activities as required
  • Adherence to all safety precautions and procedures required in the workplace in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation and policies of the Township.
  • Communicate and co-operate effectively with others, respecting the values of the corporation, both internally and externally.
  • Carry out such other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completion of Secondary School Diploma.
  • Minimum two (2) to five (5) years’ related experience and a demonstrated ability to successfully train in new duties.
  • Previous experience in winter operations snow plowing, sanding and hand shoveling is preference.
  • A valid Ontario Class G license with a satisfactory driving record; Valid Class DZ license is considered an asset.
  • Ability to carry out manual labour requiring physical dexterity for maintenance efforts of the department in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of manual and power equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards related to snow removal.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proficient with the use of computers including email, internet, work order and timekeeping software an asset.
  • Ability to work hours beyond the normal work week, including evenings and weekends and ability to work on a rotational basis or be on call.
  • Willing and able to work in an outdoor environment and actively participate in daily activities in various weather conditions.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful candidate(s) must submit a Criminal Record Check satisfactory to the Township.

Rate of Pay

The rate of pay is $27.04 per hour (2024 rate) as per Collective Agreement, plus statutory holidays and vacation pay as per the Employment Standards Act.


Hours of Work

This position will work 40 hours per week until April 2024; however, extended hours or additional hours on a call-in basis are required in inclement weather/road conditions. In addition, this position may be required to work early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays or on a rotational basis and be on call.
