PARKS & HORTICULTURE LABOURER (Summer Position - May to August)
Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Recreation Facilities, the Parks & Horticulture Labourer is responsible for performing landscape, horticultural and turf maintenance, flower watering services, sports field maintenance and safe operations of tools and equipment.
Both full-time and part-time opportunities may be available.
This position will include but is not limited to:
- Grass cutting and line trimming.
- Planting bed maintenance including weeding, trimming, planting, application of mulch, removal of unwanted or expired plants, and watering.
- Cleaning/power washing and maintenance of pathways, walkways and features.
- Operating a pickup truck and trailer, hand tools, power tools, mowers, etc.
- Assisting with special event set up, operation and take down, including evenings and weekends.
- Assisting with daily outdoor operations of Town parks, outdoor sports facilities, horticultural areas and community trail system.
- Cleaning washrooms and performing other custodial duties at Town parks and outdoor recreation facilities.
- Removing trash and litter from Town parks, outdoor sports facilities and community trail system.
- Interacting with public, providing information to public, acquiring and maintaining knowledge of various elements of Hanover’s outdoor public spaces for communication to the public when on duty.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Experience operating various hand and power tools is an asset
- Experience operating turf maintenance equipment such as riding and push mowers is an asset
- Must be self-motivated with a proven ability to work effectively in a team as well as independently, with minimal supervision
- Landscaping, horticulture and property maintenance knowledge is an asset
- Experience operating a pickup truck and trailer combination is an asset
- Attention to detail, time management and planning skills are necessary
- Valid Ontario Class ‘G2’ or higher driver’s license in good standing
- Possess a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Check with results satisfactory to the Town of Hanover
- Capable of performing physically demanding tasks while working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Must be willing and able to work shifts that include early mornings, daytime, weekdays, weekends and/or holidays as required.
