Job Summary

The Park Person I position is a versatile role encompassing four distinct functions: Horticulture, General Maintenance, Playground Oversight, and Sports Field Management. Each function requires specialized skills and expertise. Candidates have the opportunity to be hired individually for one of these roles. In this position, you'll contribute to the care and enhancement of our community's outdoor spaces, ensuring they remain safe, beautiful, and enjoyable.

Whether you have a green thumb for horticulture, skilled in general maintenance, passionate about playground safety, or excel in sports field management, you can play a vital role in maintaining and improving our parks.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for planning, designing, planting and maintaining seasonal flower beds, shrubs, trees, and planters in a geographical location;

Oversee and carry out Integrated Pest management, cultural practices and yearly renovations, in line with city standards;

Purchase of plant material;

Responsible for pruning of trees, shrubs, and perennials

Chainsaw & brush chipper use

Manual

Installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of minor irrigation repairs;

Inspection and reporting of Parks Amenities and property;

Participate in litter and garbage collection when needed;

Provide leadership to team members, training on equipment, policies and standards, establishing work plans;

Answer inquiries from the public and city staff;

Be a liaise including but not limited to:

General Contractors

Other City Departments

Parks Planning

Parks Development

FPM

Volunteers

Assist with set up and take down of community and special events, including delivery of materials and equipment;

Maintain equipment and tools regularly;

Perform administration functions such as but not limited to:

Drawdowns

P-Card reconciliation

IFI WO completion

ActiveNet

SharePoint uploads

Perform general carpentry work;

Perform winter maintenance as needed; including but not limited to: hand shovelling, plowing, and salting;

Participate in the Parks on call program;

Participate in seasonal horticulture duties, including pruning operations;

Participate in turf maintenance, hard surface and leaf clean-up when needed;

Assist with the Natural Ice Rink Program;

Assist with purchasing of materials and equipment;

Participate in divisional committees;

Act as the area Supervisor, Parks Operations in their absence and as appointed;

Comply with relevant City policies. Responsible to ensure parks are maintained to City and CSA standards;

Assist in coordinating programs, projects and team members to carry out daily duties.

Skills and Qualifications

Post-secondary College or University program in Horticulture, Turf Management with 5 years’ experience in Park Operations or the equivalent combination of education and experience;

Valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License;

Valid Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License considered an asset;

Valid Standard First Aid and CPR ‘C’ is required or needs to be obtained prior to employment start date;

Microsoft Office programs and relevant City of Mississauga software experience is required;

Ability to safely operate and maintain small and large vehicles and equipment;

Comfortable working primarily in parkland with exposure to temperatures, varying weather conditions, and contaminants of various kinds.

Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 65,753 - $ 87,671
