JOB SUMMARY:
Niagara Support Services provides a Section 23 classroom for children with a diagnosis of autism and are in grades 1-8. This part-time position involves working with students in a classroom setting, following the direction of the classroom teacher and the Movement Specialist. The focus of the position is to ensure that support is given to individual students and that the support takes place in an environment conducive to experiential learning and in keeping with the student's agreed upon plan. The position contributes in a part-time capacity to the team approach to assist the student in ultimately reintegrating back into the school community. It is also imperative that the individual maintain an awareness and concern for the agency's interest and investment at all times through the regular practice of sound and honest judgement.
ACCOUNABILITY
This position reports directly to the Supervisor, Community & Children’s Services
Hours of Work:
- Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 2:00pm with the understanding that hours may fluctuate based on program needs.
- CAP runs in accordance with the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) annual calendar (i.e. September to June) and as such in the role as a Part Time Support Worker, you are required to attend work during the times that school is in session. During the summer months of July and August while the DSBN is not in session, this position will be off from work.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Supports: Under the direction of the DSBN classroom teacher and movement specialist this position will:
- Act as a member of the team, implementing effective strategies/support for the student in the class.
- Implement an experiential Movement/Educational Program
- Support the teacher in providing a Special Education Program to the student.
- Supervise and support the individual in the development of life skills, such as personal hygiene, outings etc., as the individual may require.
- Implementing programs and strategies developed for a student by internal and external service delivery teams.
- Work with the student as per individual Plan of Care and learning environment.
- Transporting the student to any outside activities
Professional Development:
- Attend relevant conferences.
- Remain current as to new developments in related field(s).
- Participate in all in-house training sessions. This may occur outside of the school day.
- Submit reports on all training attended.
Health and Safety:
- Work in a safe and healthful manner.
- Have knowledge of all Health and Safety policies.
- Report any problems or hazards immediately to the appropriate individual.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two year community college diploma in social science field or study or equivalent.
- Up to two (2) years of practical experience with persons that have a disability.
- Experience working with children/youth with Autism.
- Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills.
- Demonstrated ability and experience in leadership and coordination of activities.
- Excellent driving record and possess a Class "G" driver's license.
- Current First Aid, CPR and NVCI certificates.
- Current satisfactory Police Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening certificate.
