The Pathway & Trails Inventory Technical Student will assist the Mobility subject matter experts in carrying out projects and tasks related to the inventory, status, monitoring, and assessment of Mobility natural and physical assets (for example: trees, vegetation, habitats, pathways, trails, benches, and garbage cans). Primary duties will include:
  • Data collection using iPad, ArcGIS online and ArcGIS desktop. Data collected could include: 
    • Asset condition rating, specific asset deficiencies (for example: cracking, potholes, broken components), and reporting of specific failure points.
    • Soil moisture readings, tree species and tree size, and tree vaults.
    • Native plants and invasive species counts and areas, insect trap counts, and phytomonitoring.
    • Any other physical or natural attribute related to a Mobility asset or site.
  • Collection of image data related to pathway conditions, either through mounted camera or via device cameras for inspection.
  • Upload captured imagery on a daily basis to databases for future analysis.
  • Perform GIS analysis and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on data collected as directed by supervisor.
  • Provide regular status reports and/or progress reports on assigned projects and tasks to be reviewed by supervisor.
  • Create written summary reports, including combination of maps, graphs, and written qualitative comparisons on GIS analysis for supervisor review.

Working Conditions:Work is performed in the field (often rough terrain, weather, insects) and in an office environment.

 
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a diploma or degree program in Biological Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, Horticulture, Geography, Botany, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Ecological Restoration, Engineering, Surveying, or a related program.
  • Applicants must have the ability to read maps, engineering drawings, and plans.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online is required.
  • A valid class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and the use of a personal vehicle is required.
  • Native and invasive plant identification and surveying skills, experience with invasive plant management and restoration, and experience with data collection and mapping will be considered assets.
  • You have the ability to work collaboratively as well as independently, have strong communication and research skills, and are comfortable working with iPads or other mobile devices.
  • The ability to multitask, and complete work assignments in a timely manner.
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in school on a full-time basis with the intent to return to school full-time in the Fall of 2024.
  • If invited to an interview, you will be asked to provide an unofficial transcript or an enrollment verification letter (indicating the program and year you are currently completing).
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
