is seeking

Full-Time Patrol Road Workers2/Winter Patrollers for its Auburn and Wroexter locations!

This position has dual roles which are relative to the seasons. During the Summer season (April – November), the incumbent will be a Patrol Road Worker and in the Winter season (November – April), the incumbent will be assigned as a Plow Operator or Winter Patroller.

Position Summary:

Patrol Road Worker 2: An individual that operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment (Grader, Backhoe, Loader, Boom Mower, etc..) to repair and maintain roads and drainage. Performs road and roadside maintenance and repair activities as well as yard, shop, and equipment maintenance. Uses power equipment and hand tools as required and includes manual labour for routine tasks such as tree cutting/removal, post installations, guide rail repairs, placing asphalt and granular materials.

Winter Patroller: Monitors condition of roads in accordance with standards, monitors weather conditions and forecasts, directs response by contracted services, coordinates winter operations, and ensures that all required logs and records are produced and maintained. May additionally perform duties of a Plow Operator, if qualified, as-needed.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Patrol Road Worker 2

  • Operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment such as: Tandem, Grader, Backhoe, Loader, and Boom Mower.
  • Assists in the operation of specialized equipment such as Line Painter and Hand Painting.
  • Operates other equipment and tools such as chainsaw, trucks, tractors, mowers, and miscellaneous power and hand tools.
  • Performs various road activities including: asphalt patching and sweeping, line painting, road patrolling, removal and disposal of dead animals.
  • Performs various roadside activities including: mowing, trimming, tree cutting, litter/debris pickup, sign repairs and installations, guiderail repairs, shoulder maintenance and repairs.
  • Performs various drainage activities including: clearing blockages, placement of rip-rap, repair of small headwalls, install culvert liners, installation of small culverts, repair of manholes, catchbasins, curb/gutter, sidewalks.
  • Performs shop, yard, vehicle, equipment maintenance as directed by Supervisor and Lead Hand.
  • Assists in the construction of formwork for concrete repairs (catchbasins, curbs, manholes, sidewalk, etc..), placement of re-bar when required, placement and finishing of concrete, and removal of forms.
  • May assist with Non-structural welding – repairs and minor fabrication.
  • Subject to call-ins outside of regular work hours for emergency repairs and maintenance.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned and as needed including, but not limited to: hauling materials, hand sweeping/shoveling/levelling, sign-making,
  • traffic counter installations, etc.

Winter Patroller

  • Monitor road and weather conditions and can accurately interpret detailed road weather forecasts.
  • Responsible for calling out plow operators to maintain roads based observed conditions and/or weather forecast.
  • Logs all actions directed and taken by crews and contractors on the roadway.
  • Responds and documents calls from the public, OPP, and other county and municipal staff regarding road conditions and issues.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Collaborates with full-time experienced plow operators to determine the best options for the current and expected conditions using a combination of observations, weather forecasts, and experience.
  • Open and close roads as directed by OPP.
  • Monitor and record condition of signs and other road hazards and report them to the lead hand or supervisor to coordinate resolution.
  • Drive and inspect representative winter route to determine conditions and maintain detailed logs and apply anti-icing materials to the road when deemed appropriate.
  • MMS road inspection of all roads in the patrol to look for and identify any and all defects and hazards – record them – and present them to the Lead Hand or Supervisor to coordinate resolution.
  • Remove road hazards such as trees, debris, and dead animals from the roadway.
  • Snow removal and maintenance around the yard.
  • Must have clear and accurate record keeping abilities.
  • Partakes in the plow operator training program if not already qualified.
  • Backup plow operator when required once qualified.
  • Other shop, equipment, yard, and road maintenance duties as needed as defined by road maintenance 2 position.

Qualifications:

  • DZ License within 2 years of full-time employment.
  • Heavy equipment operator of at least one of the following: Grader, Backhoe, Loader, Boom Mower.
  • Minimum 2 years previous construction and/or maintenance experience required.
  • Driver’s Abstract containing no significant record of violations.
  • Qualified to operate a chainsaw.
  • A Certified Huron County Plow Operator within the first year of employment by participating in the training program.

Hours of work:

The standard work hours are 40 per week. Hours and schedule will vary as listed below:

Patrol Road Worker 2

  • Standard Summer hours are 10-hour days from 6:30 AM to 5 PM Monday through Thursday. Overtime is expected as needed.

Winter Patroller

  • Plow Operator Shift Rotation/Assignment: Weekdays – 8-hour shifts: 4:00 AM to 12:30 PM / 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM and on-call every second weekend. Overtime is expected as needed throughout the week.
  • Winter Patroller Shift Rotation/Assignment: 7 consecutive days – 12-hour shifts: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM / 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM followed by 7 consecutive days off-duty.

Wage:

  • Patrol Road Worker 2 – $25.87 to $30.26 as per the 2023 non-union wage grid.
  • Winter Patroller – $28.98 to $28.98 to $33.91 as per the 2023 non-union wage grid.
  • Compensation includes a competitive benefits package.
  • OMERS pension plan.
