About the Role

The Payroll Assistant Manager is responsible for a range of duties ensuring the HR department delivers best practices to support the business across Canada, the U.S., and other international sites. Responsibilities include but are not limited to processing payroll weekly for our Canadian and US locations, and for both hourly and salary positions. The Payroll Assistant Manager must support the Payroll Manager in his/her duties.

This position is full time and offers a hybrid work model.

Job Responsibilities

  • Process weekly and bi-weekly payrolls for Canadian and US locations;
  • Process payroll for hourly, salary, union, and non-union employees;
  • Ensure all government and third-party payments are issued correctly;
  • Prepare weekly journal entries pertaining to payroll;
  • Reconcile year end; balance, prepare and issue documentation for all provincial and federal requirements as required;
  • Review and ensure all new hires and terminations are processed accordingly;
  • Prepare records of employment and manual cheques, as needed;
  • Prepare T4s, T4As and pension adjustments for year-end balancing;
  • Identify process improvement initiatives and define standards for new processes;
  • Process terminations, including calculating vacations owing;
  • Communicate with employees on payroll inquiries, as required;
  • Maintain and update employee information in the ADP software;
  • Maintain confidentiality with payroll information;
  • Stay up to date with relevant labour laws and trends to ensure that the payroll process and postings comply with all legal requirements and the Company policies;
  • Act as back up for the Payroll Team;
  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned based on the business needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of payroll experience in a fast-paced unionized environment;
  • 2 years’ experience with ADP Workforce Now;
  • PCP Certified or in progress;
  • Strong understanding of Payroll, HR, processes, and data, including CBA agreements and benefit procedures;
  • Effective organizational and interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communications;
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in high pressure, sensitive situations;
  • Ability to meet aggressive deadlines;
  • Strong time management skills;
  • Excellent computer skills; MS Office or Google;
  • Ability to commute to the Markham, ON office.
